SAMA wins bid to host WMA General Assembly in 2014 in Durban South Africa

After considerable debate culminating in a secret ballot at the  World Medical Association (WMA) Council meeting attended by 40 national medical associations in Prague, Czech Republic, SAMA won the bid to host the 65th World Medical Association General Assembly in Durban, South Africa in 2014 with support from the Durban KwaZulu-Natal Convention Bureau. The other contenders were Argentina, Latvia, Russia and Indonesia (Bali).

Presenting the South African Medical Association’s credentials were SAMA president, Prof Mac Lukhele, acting Chairman Dr Mark Sonderup and General Manager, Dr Vusi Memela. This prestigious annual event will now take place at the International Convention Centre, Durban, in October 2014.

This will be third occasion that South Africa will be hosting the WMA General Assembly, the two previous being the 48th annual assembly in Somerset West in 1996 and the 57th at Sun City in October 2006.The 2012 WMA General Assembly will be in Bangkok, Thailand and 2013 in Fortaleza, Brazil.

The event last year in Montevideo, Uruguay - attended by Prof Lukhele, immediate past chairman Dr Norman Mabasa, and acting general manager Dr Zameer Brey - attracted delegates from almost 50 national medical associations. During this particular meeting it was announced that the WMA membership had risen to a record high of 100 national medical associations.

South Africa is already on the WMA’s agenda later this year when SAMA will be hosting the world association’s 1st expert conference on the Declaration of Helsinki. The meeting forms part of the international review of the document guiding ethical principles in research on human beings. The meeting will be held in Cape Town, December 5 - 7.
