Frieze Art Fair shows how much demand for event WiFi is growing

Guests at Frieze Art Fair transferred nearly a Terabyte (989Gb) of data over 4 days. The statistics retrieved from the Meraki Dashboard show that nearly 5,000 devices were connected to the WiFi network over the course of the event. Communications services were provided by specialists Max WiFi who installed a 100Mb fibre optic leased line into Regent’s Park specifically for the Fair.

Head of IT at Frieze Art Fair Sean Chambers was delighted with Max WiFi’s service saying ‘Max WiFi delivered as promised. The service ran smoothly and efficiently, with no downtime or problems. There was a tremendous amount of information being uploaded and downloaded, far more than we imagined and the network delivered perfectly. Richard’s prediction of WiFi demand increasing was absolutely right.’

The statistics of who used the WiFi are more interesting, the public WiFi provided at the show accounted for most of the traffic with nearly 70% of all data transferred. The rest of the traffic was transferred over Exhibitor and Production networks showing clearly how much the demand for public WiFi at events has increased dramatically. On average 6.5 megabytes of data was transferred every second! Managing Director of Max WiFi Richard Hughes said ‘Frieze Art Fair shows how the use of Cloud computing and social media has increased the demand for WiFi, this is going to continue and organisers need to be aware. Getting the WiFi right could make the difference between a brilliant event and a loss of reputation.’

Over 85% of the clients that connected to the WiFi during the course of the event were using Apple devices, predominantly iPhones and iPads.   This clearly shows how the explosion of mobile Internet devices has increased demands placed on network infrastructure in recent months.

This is just one of the large events Max WiFi has supplied WiFi to this year; others include the Hampton Court Flower Festival, Windsor Horse Show and the Scottish Elections.
