The Independent Hotel Show reports a 12% increase in visitor numbers for 2016

The Independent Hotel Show, presented by James Hallam Hospitality & Leisure, which took place on 18 & 19 October at Olympia, has announced a 12% increase in visitor numbers this year, and the busiest first day ever. Over 6,300 of the UK’s independent hoteliers networked with peers, negotiated new deals with 300 premium suppliers and attended topical seminars which highlighted the opportunities the industry is presented with today.

Breaking records elsewhere at the show, almost 4,000 votes were cast in the annual Independent Hotel Show Awards in association with Sky. The awards for Independent Hotelier and Outstanding New Hotel were bestowed upon Kate Levin, general manager, The Capital and The Laslett respectively.

Highlighting the show’s stellar reputation as a dynamic and innovative business event for the sector, a selection of exhibitors chose the platform to launch new products or services to the captive market of independent and boutique hoteliers.

Technology specialists Meshh launched a brand new service which builds hyper local media networks for brands, agencies and properties to create incredibly fast mobile content that is exclusively available from a physical environment or location. The new service allows hoteliers to provide their guests with superfast access to entertainment content via their mobile.

The team behind spectacular seaside hotel Watergate Bay announced the exciting launch of a new hotel collection, Another Place, on day one of the show. The new hotels will embody a laid-back, active and social ethos, offering outstanding food, in coastal, countryside and city locations across the UK. The first hotel to open will be Another Place, The Lake situated on the shores of Ullswater in the Lake District which is now taking bookings for August 2017.

Will Ashworth, MD of Watergate Bay Hotel & Another Place, said, "We chose the Independent Hotel Show as a platform to unveil our new hotel collection - Another Place - and it didn't disappoint. The high number of industry leaders and opinion formers in one location for such a concentrated amount of time was very impressive."

Other highlights of the show included the Power Breakfast powered by Quinyx to open day two of the show. The invitation-only event saw leading industry figures Andrew Stembridge, managing director, Chewton Glen & Clivedon House, Anthony Lee, CEO, Great Northern Hotel, Richard Ball, Executive Chairman of Calcot Hotels and Harry Cragoe, Owner, The Gallivant reflect on the rapidly changing industry and predict trends for 2017.

Alongside the business opportunities, attendees had the chance to hear from leading names in the industry in 30 seminars that took place across three dedicated stages; the Business Theatre in partnership with Nespresso, the Innovation Stage in partnership with eviivo and the Wellness & Lifestyle Stage supported by Dröm UK covering a range of topics including marketing, finance, OTAs, design and destination dining.

Robin Sheppard FIH MI, chairman of Bespoke Hotels, took to the stage for a seminar on the Wellness & Lifestyle Stage discussing how entrepreneurial hoteliers can stay alert to new revenue possibilities and offered his congratulations to the show for the record-breaking year: “Thank you so much for inviting me to attend the Independent Hotel Show. I think you had a record attendance and a massive number of exhibitors.  I offer my hearty congratulations in turning the show into an annual fixture.”

Miranda Martin, show director commented on the show’s success: ‘We are absolutely thrilled with this year’s Independent Hotel Show. It has surpassed itself with record attendees, voting numbers and 61% of exhibitors already committed to returning in 2017. For two days, there was an audible buzz in the air with the negotiation of business deals and passionate discussions about the industry, set against a dynamic backdrop of product and service providers dedicated to the development of independent hotels today. We are already looking forward to bringing together even more thought leaders, experts and quality suppliers on 17 and 18 October next year.”

The Independent Hotel Show will return on 17 & 18 October 2017 at London Olympia.
