London announces major international medical conference win at IMEX America

America’s Alzheimer’s Association to host its bi-annual conference in London for the first time in 2017

London's reputation as a world-leading medical conference capital has been boosted by the announcement that the Alzheimer’s Association will host its annual conference in London for the first time in 2017.
The six-day event, which will take place at the city’s international convention centre ExCeL London, will see over 5,000 delegates gather to promote an international exchange of ideas in Alzheimer’s disease.

The new win was announced ahead of London & Partners’ MedCity event at their IMEX America booth. The Alzheimer’s Association conference, which will take place from 15-20 July 2017, joins a growing number of medical events being held in the capital. ExCeL London hosted four major life sciences conferences this year alone, while 2015 will see 35,000 senior medical professionals attend the five-day European Society of Cardiology Congress in August-September.

Medical meetings are some of the largest events in the world and competition to host them is fierce. London is an increasingly attractive option according to Becky Graveney, Head of Associations at London & Partners, the Mayor of London’s promotional company for the city. She says:  "London has everything that major associations are looking for in a conference destination. The city and the wider region is a world-leading hub of innovative research and development.  From the development of the new Francis Crick Institute to the launch of MedCity, delegates know that in London they are in the right place to make great contacts and explore the very latest developments in their sector.”

Talking about why London was chosen for the 2017 event Darren Mendola, Senior Director of Conference Services at the Alzheimer's Association said: “London has everything an international conference attendee needs: stunning historic attractions, excellent transport connectivity and high-tech, high-capacity events spaces.  London & Partners’ professional convention bureau team and ExCeL’s efficient convention centre staff makes organising an event in London effortless for a meeting planner. This combined with the UK government’s commitment to Alzheimer’s research made London the leading choice for our 2017 event.”

The news has been welcomed by Dr Eliot Forster, Executive Chair of MedCity, an initiative launched by Mayor of London Boris Johnson in April this year to develop the London-Oxford-Cambridge golden triangle into a world-leading cluster for life sciences and healthcare enterprise and investment. He says: “Alzheimer’s is firmly on the UK’s agenda as a major global challenge on which we are focusing our considerable joint expertise and resources to tackle. Events like this are a valuable way to share knowledge, extend networks and lay the groundwork for new collaborations. Having this major conference on our doorstep will open up terrific opportunities and build crucial cross-industry ties at this vital time in the fight against dementia.”

The London & Partners team are at IMEX America in Las Vegas on booth #2416 and will be attending EIBTM in Barcelona on stand G10. Event planners at IMEX America interested in finding out more about London’s life sciences offer should join the London Convention Bureau’s MedCity event today at 3.30pm on booth #2416.
