Facilities operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV) helped athletes to win a total of 13 medals at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Six GB athletes who train at EIS Sheffield secured medals at London 2012, placing the state-of-the-art venue in 20th position on the same number of golds as Jamaica.
Sheffield’s own golden girl Jess Ennis led the medal charge with a stunning gold in the heptathlon on Super Saturday for Team GB. The 26-year-old’s success was celebrated with a private reception for Jess and her family at SIV’s Sheffield City Hall as part of a huge city centre civic ceremony, which attracted around 20,000 people.

There were golds for boxers Luke Campbell, Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams, who made history by winning the first ever women's boxing medal in the Olympics.

Joining them on the podium were two other athletes from the GB Boxing squad, which is based at EIS Sheffield. There was a silver medal for Fred Evans and bronze for Anthony Ogogo to ensure GB's best Olympic boxing performance for more than 100 years.

SIV facilities also played host to a number of training camps before the Games.

The USA Diving team, which held its final training camp ahead of London 2012 at SIV’s Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, won a total of four medals including one gold, two silver and one bronze.

In the Rhythmic Gymnastics events, Russia topped the medal table with two golds and a silver. The team prepared for the Olympics with a training camp at SIV’s Motorpoint Arena.

Canada’s synchronised swimming team, which made a final stop at Ponds Forge before heading to London for the Olympics narrowly missed out on a medal finishing fourth. Dominic Stokes, general manager of SIV Events, which is responsible for procuring major events for the company, said: “We are extremely proud of the important role that SIV has played in supporting these athletes to achieve their Olympic dreams.

“Our iconic, multi-use facilities have contributed to 13 medals for individuals and teams at 2012, which is an incredible achievement and testament to quality of our venues.

“From major televised sporting championships and training camps to concerts and exhibitions, our diverse and flexible facilities provide one of the widest choices of event spaces in the UK.”
