Goose Live Events to host James Hunt tribute at the 2016 Silverstone Classic

James Hunt
Goose Live Events - organisers of the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, the Silverstone Classic - has announced that its flagship event will  this year celebrate the life of one of Britain’s most charismatic and well-loved sportsmen, the late James Hunt.

This summer, the annual three-day festival (29-31 July), will host a special celebration to mark the 40th anniversary of James Hunt’s historic 1976 FIA Formula One World Championship win, marking this crowning achievement with some unique displays curated by James Hunt’s two sons Freddie and Tom. The displays will include a number of the racing icon’s most notable road and racing cars as well as rarely seen trophies and memorabilia from his title-winning 1976 season.

The tribute at the Silverstone Classic provides an appropriate forum for this significant commemorative event as Hunt celebrated more Formula One success at the superfast Northamptonshire venue than at any other circuit in the world, including a hugely popular maiden F1 win at the famous circuit in 1974.

Commenting on the celebrations, Freddie Hunt said: “I know the crowds at Silverstone back in the seventies really took my Dad’s heroics to their hearts, so it’s going to be very special for all of us in the family to be marking the 40th anniversary of his World Championship at this summer’s Silverstone Classic.”

Freddie, who recently took to the circuit in his father’s McLaren 23 at a special media preview day and plans to race a giant-killing 1960s Mini at the Classic this year, adds: “I’ve seen so many photos and films of my father racing the M23 that it was really emotional to get behind the wheel and experience just a smidgeon of what it must have been like to race these fantastic F1 cars in period. It really was a remarkable era and one which the Classic always celebrates in style.”

Nick Wigley, CEO of Goose Live Events and Event Director for the Silverstone Classic comments: “The Silverstone Classic has become one of our proudest accomplishments and it could not be more fitting to have the Hunt family involved in this year’s Classic, 40 years after James famously took the title in 1976. Knowing just how special James was to the fans at Silverstone, we invited his son, Freddie, to last year’s event and have been making plans to celebrate this significant anniversary ever since. We look forward to seeing these plans come to life at this year’s event.”

The 26th annual Silverstone Classic will take place from 29th– 31st July at the Home of British Motorsport.
