Team adidas earns stripes at Quinta do Lago

Team adidas earned their stripes with a win over team TaylorMade at the inaugural TaylorMade-adidas Ambassador Cup, held at Quinta do Lago.
A total of 36 TaylorMade-adidas golf ambassadors gathered at the multi-award-winning Quinta do Lago resort for a fun, but competitive Ambassador Cup, split between Team adidas, captained by TaylorMade-adidas Golf EMEAP’s commercial director Andrew Law, and team TaylorMade, under the captaincy of David Silvers, the company’s managing director.

The pairings were announced during the opening ceremony at the Casa do Lago restaurant and it was Minchinhampton GC professional Chris Steele who had the honour of hitting the opening tee shot on the immaculate Laranjal course.

Team adidas took a commanding early lead, with only their last pair failing to be ahead after the first two hours of play. Silvers quickly took matters into his own hands, rallying his team and closing the gap to within a couple of points as the event neared its conclusion.

Nerves were plentiful as Casper Bruun gave Team TaylorMade the lead for the first time in the day after a clutch birdie on the 16th hole in the seventh match, but, this time, it was captain Law who inspired his players, primarily Pablo Herreria, to respond, and a birdie on the next hole meant a half on the last would be enough to give Law’s team victory.

With Bruun hitting a fine pitch to five feet, Team adidas’ Gareth Lewis stood over a daunting 25ft putt with his captain ready to uncork the champagne. Lewis’ putt found the bottom of the cup and Law’s team were the victors in the first outing of the TaylorMade Ambassador Cup.

The closing ceremony was held at the Bovino restaurant, at Quinta do Lago, with the resort’s general manager, Nuno Gonçalves, presenting the trophy to Law, who duly celebrated with his team.

Named as ‘Europe’s Best Golf Venue’ at the 2015 World Golf Awards, Quinta do Lago was the ideal resort to stage the tournament having invested €50m over the last six years to reinvent itself as one of the world’s most vibrant luxury lifestyle experiences.

Officially opened by former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley in October 2014, Quinta do Lago’s North Course has quickly risen to become one of the new stars of European golf and, as well as being named ‘Europe’s Best New Golf Course’ at the 2014 World Golf Awards, was a new entry in Golf World’s benchmark Top 100 Courses in Continental Europe 2015/16 rankings.
