Toronto tempts Foodies in 2016 - 30 new restaurants

“You are what you eat”, but Torontonians believe it is where the eating takes place that really matters. With UK visitor numbers up 10 per cent in 2015 and new flight routes from Gatwick to Toronto with Air Canada rouge and WestJet launching this May, now is the time to taste Toronto ahead of the crowd. The world’s most multicultural city can tempt all taste buds, whatever the palate – and has welcomed thirty new restaurants* to date in 2016.

With so many vibrant cultures living side-by-side (47 per cent of city dwellers have a first language that is neither English nor French), foodies are certain to find their fix. Head to South Core in the city centre, Scarborough in the city’s east, or the LGBT hub of Church-Wellesley village to find independent, eclectic and memorable spots for coffee, cocktails, and dining. For craft ale lovers, Toronto is top of the list: a new crop of breweries is springing up across the city, following the success of Amsterdam Brewhouse (complete with lake views) and spots like Barhop on King Street West, offering 36 taps.  

2016 brings the third annual Taste of Toronto food festival, 23-26 June, showcasing over 70 vendors in its bustling marketplace; live demonstrations; hands-on master classes; and the opportunity to discover the city’s finest flavours. Located in Garrison Common in Fort York, this is the only Taste event in North America.  

In 2012, US-born two-Michelin-starred chef David Chang unveiled his three-storey Momofuku in downtown Toronto, opening the next chapter in the city’s food story. Other celebrity chefs followed: Michelin-starred Frenchman Daniel Boulud opened Café Boulud in Yorkville whilst American Jonathan Waxman created Californian-inspired Montecito. With international hip hop star Drake, Susur Lee opened Fring’s in 2015, whilst Jamie Oliver chose Toronto as the location for his first North American Jamie’s Italian in late 2015, following hot on the Hollywood heels of celebrity-cum-restaurateur Mark Wahlberg, who opened his Wahlburgers burger restaurant in 2014.  

Rasta Pasta, a Jamaican jerk chicken and pasta joint, embodies the Toronto food scene:  as diverse and eclectic as the city’s population. La Cubana, a Cuban diner, sits right next to Shala-Mar, an Indian restaurant, in Roncesvalles in Toronto’s West End; close by is Nine Restaurant and Tapas Bar, offering Korean tapas, a plethora of pizzerias - including the buzzing Pizzeria Defina - and Barque, for Authentic Southern Ontario barbeque.  

If that’s not enough choice, just round the corner on Parkdale diners can find Brazilian menus at Mata; tasty tacos at Grand Electric; Miss Thing’s tiki cocktail bar; and roti at Mother India. Still hungry..?
