Copper Box Arena selected to host the British Darts Organisations Winmau World Masters from 2016

The Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has been selected by the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and the world’s leading darts brand, Winmau, as the venue for the 43rd Winmau World Masters from 2016.
As part of an initial five-year deal with London’s third largest arena, the world’s oldest major darts tournament will be staged during 2016 over the weekend of 24th – 27th November. The Winmau World Masters will be the end-of-year marquee event for BDO and the highlight of the three new 'Majors' that complement the iconic BDO Lakeside World Championships.

Created as part of a ‘new era’ for British darts, the Winmau World Masters will also incorporate the new end of season player’s awards.

The announcement comes shortly after the Copper Box Arena won the accolade for New Event Space at the national Event Awards and follows a rich programme of major sporting competitions staged at the former Olympic venue during 2015.

Peter Bundey, Deputy Managing Director of GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operates the Copper Box Arena, said:   “We are really excited that the Copper Box Arena has been chosen to host the new end-of-year highlight for the British Dart Organisation’s Masters. Since opening its doors to the public in 2013, the Copper Box Arena has quickly become one of London’s most versatile and exciting events venues. We’re seeing more and more interest from major sports tournaments as well as enquiries for a range of conferences, awards and exhibitions. It’s great to see the former Olympic venue being so well used.”

Sue Williams, Chairman of the BDO, said   “This is a new era for darts in Britain and I would like to thank all the people who have worked so hard over the last few months to make this happen. These are exciting times for the BDO and darts internationally. We look forward to the BDO growing from County to Professional level, backed by the biggest brands such as Winmau.”

Peter Tudor, Director of Visitor Services of London Legacy Development Corporation, said:   “It’s great to see a top flight event like the Winmau World Masters coming to the Copper Box Arena confirming Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as the place to be for the best in sport. With the European Aquatics Championships at the London Aquatics Centre and the London Anniversary Games at the Stadium, next year promises to be another fantastic year for the Copper Box Arena and venues at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.”

The Copper Box Arena is available for private hire for major sports, corporate and community events, which have recently included TechCrunch Disrupt, Gfinity European Gaming Championship, BT World Wheelchair Rugby Challenge 2015, Fiat 500x car launch and Toni & Guy Fashion Awards.
