Always at the forefront of creative musical expression, this year’s Sani Festival promises to be bigger, better, and pushing musical boundaries more than ever before! Welcoming a host of performers from across the world showcasing high class Jazz for the ‘Jazz on the Hill’ concerts, famed world music artists for the ‘Songs of the World’ and celebrating local Greek talent with the ‘Greek Variations’ performances.
Held each year in the natural beauty of Sani Resort, a 1,000 ecological reserve with its own wetlands and six pristine beaches in sunny Halkidiki, Sani Festival is renowned for its promotion of both local and international talent, fostering cross cultural links and musical diversity. Celebrating its 23rd year, Sani Festival’s philosophy of bridging the communication between tourism and the arts is now stronger and livelier than ever with a variety of art forms for audiences to enjoy. The five week programme will include a balance of international and local artists, each incredibly talented and prestigious within their own genres.
This year’s programme will feature, among others: Jazz legends Chris Potter, Dave Holland, Lionel Loueki and Eric Harland, rising star Hugh Coltman and Multiple Grammy winner Kurt Elling. Guests will be lucky enough to experience the sounds of the multiple cultures with world music artists such as Salif Keita and lovers of Greek music will be mesmerised by Elli Paspala and Philippos Pliatsikas and the Symphony Orchestra of Thessaloniki!
Jazz on the Hill
In recognition of the festivals beginnings as a Jazz festival, ‘Jazz on the Hill’ will acquaint guests with the music of internationally acclaimed jazz artists through a dedication to the male voice. Jazz on the Hill will be opened on Saturday 11th July by four superb mal jazz virtuosos Dave Holland, Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke and Eric Harland. This all-star quartet represents the best of American jazz with spectacular musical chemistry and a performance that will thrill any audience. Another highlight of this exciting jazz programme is the Friday 17th performance where guests will be soothed by Hugh Coltman’s silky smooth melodies. In his first Greek performance, Hugh will perform a brand new concert exclusively for this festival entitled Shadows - Songs of Nat King Cole. Romantics will also be thrilled to hear that Grammy Award winner Kurt Elling, will be performing his ‘Passion World’ concert, a showcase of love songs from all over the world in in their original languages in his stunning baritone voice which spans four octaves!
Sounds of the World
Sani Resort loves to enrich guest’s experiences at the resort through its promotion of international artists. This year Sani Festival’s ‘Sounds of the World’ programme welcomes Salif Keita to the stage on Friday 31st July, ‘the golden voice of Africa’ to bring the music of Mali to sunny Sani bay. Salif’s albinism has meant that he has faced discrimination in his homeland, but this has not stopped him from becoming one of Mali’s finest musicians- effortlessly blending jazz, rock and funk with the traditional roots of West African Griot.
Sani Festival’s ‘Greek Variations’ will enthral audiences with both traditional and modern Greek melodies to showcase the wonders of Greece’s home-grown talent. On Saturday 25th July, Elli Paspala and Vassilikos will perform a musical journey that embarks with unexpected musical stops along the way, through the familiar tunes and traditional Greek folk songs. Then on Saturday 8th, Chronos, a performance inspired by Greek poetry and composers will entertain audiences with arrangements compiled by a team of Greece’s best instrumentalists. In a dramatic finale on Friday 14th August Sani will welcome Fillipos Pliatsikas and the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipality of Thessaloniki to perform their ‘The Other Side of Greece’ under the direction Hari Iliadi. Presenting a multimedia approach to Greek culture this final concert will draw together different genres, where new arrangements of familiar songs will combine, to end the festival in a musical celebration of the past styles which pays tribute towards a harmonious future.
