Telford announced as key player in Rugby World Cup Tour

An innovative Ambassador Programme launched by Meet Telford & Shropshire has brought about another major success for the destination, following the exciting announcement that the Webb Ellis Trophy Rugby World Cup will visit Telford on its first day in the West Midlands.

The trophy’s tour will last 100 days in the build up to the September tournament and will come to Telford at 6pm on Saturday 18th July, which will be a fitting conclusion to Telford & Wrekin Council’s big T-Party event in the QEII Arena, in the heart of Telford’s new £multi-million Southwater development and Convention Quarter.

Sarah Bird, Business Tourism Manager for Meet Telford & Shropshire – the official Convention Bureau for the region, explained: “This is a big year for rugby and for England, with all the eyes of the world on our nation. For Telford to be chosen to be a part of this internationally acclaimed event is not only testament to our great location, but to our great facilities too.

“Behind every great event are a number of great people, and recognition should be given to our Ambassador for Sport, Chris Childs, in landing this fantastic event for Telford and Shropshire.  Ambassadors like Chris really do play a powerful role in the growth and success of our region, and help to deliver real economic growth.”

Chief Executive at Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Ambassador for the region, Chris Childs, said: “Our region is home to a range of hidden treasures, as well as a number of sporting and natural assets that really make us stand out from the crowd, so we’re over the moon to be welcoming the Webb Ellis Trophy to the region in July. Energize is all about getting hearts beating faster, not only from a health perspective, but getting people excited about Telford and Shropshire as a leading destination for sport and leisure activities and conventions and events, and the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour will undoubtedly do just that.”

The Webb Ellis Trophy’s journey through the UK and Ireland aims to engage fans and give them the opportunity to build unforgettable memories in the build up to the six-week rugby extravaganza. Its visit to Telford coincides with the destination’s free T-Party event – a day celebrating sport and leisure activities, arts, crafts, music, and street theatre.

“Launched in 2014, our Ambassador programme plays a vital role in firmly positioning Telford and Shropshire as a major events destination,” continued Sarah. “And with Telford leading the way in sectors including sport, defence, automotive, food and drink, and advanced manufacturing, the Ambassadors are playing a vital role in attracting some major new events to the destination in these exciting sectors.”
