First European Fatty Liver Conference 2015 in Maastricht

On March 5th and 6th, the Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC) organises the first “European Fatty Liver Conference” (EFLC). This symposium on non-alcoholical fatty liver disease has over 100 participants and focuses on scientists and clinicians from The Netherlands, as well as other European countries such as Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Italy and Germany.

At the moment, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most occurring liver disease in the Western world, associated to overweight and obesity. More and more we are confronted with the systemic effects such as gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer. During EFCL, this will be discussed as well as diagnostic methods and therapeutical approaches of NAFDL. Renowned national and international speakers are recruited, making sure the conference is up-to-date and of high quality.

Scientist, clinician and pharmacist
The symposium is interesting to both scientists as well as clinicians, who are more and more confronted with the systemic effects of NAFLD. The fact that various aspects of NAFLD will be discussed, makes EFCL interesting for the pharmaceutical industry as well. Fundamental research results on the effects of NAFLD on various physical functions and diagnostic and therapeutical modalities are discussed.

Importance international cooperation
Attention for NAFLD becomes more and more important in the near future. Therefore, the care focuses on patients not only in a preventative way, but also on patients with active non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). A cooperation between European experts, both basic scientists and clinicians working in the field over liver and associated diseases, as well as the pharmaceutical industry is the foundation for a successful treatment. With regards to that, this symposium is an important initiative.

Economic importance
International conferences such as EFLC are of economic importance to the city of Maastricht. Next to the revenue, these kind of events are very important for employment and brand awareness of the region.
