A virtually Vivid experience earns Sydney a Visionary Award 2014 nomination

Voting is now open for the Prevue Visionary Award 2014 and Sydney has been shortlisted in the International Destination category.
The Visionary Awards recognise venues, destinations and suppliers that have leveraged technology and innovation in creative and ground-breaking ways to enhance the meeting and event experience.

Sydney was shortlisted for its innovative use of technology to create a memorable experience for visitors to the Destination Sydney stand at the Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo (AIME) 2014.

The stand featured a replica of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, which spanned the entire Destination Sydney footprint and could hold up to 12 people.

Visitors to the Sydney stand were encouraged to climb the bridge and sample the stunning views available to visitors through the latest technology in theatre experience, iTVGoggles. Wearers of the cinema goggles were transported to Sydney, immersed in footage of the harbour city's iconic light and sound festival, Vivid Sydney.

Lyn Lewis-Smith, CEO of Business Events Sydney (BESydney), said the use of technology at this year's show really helped the Destination Sydney team to 'up the ante' and reconstruct a uniquely Sydney experience on the show floor.

"In Sydney, we like to think big! We have the support of industry to make just about anything possible. This is how we want people to think about Sydney - as a place that is forward-thinking and engaging, where brilliant ideas come to life.

"Sydney is a visionary hub with notable home-grown innovations including Google Maps, the bionic ear and the pacemaker.

"We are delighted to be nominated in this year's awards and are proud to be representing Australia's innovative talents."

The iTVGoggles dedicate a high resolution LCD screen to each eye and, combined with audio, the wearer becomes submerged in a surreal digital experience. By linking the virtual reality with the physical act of climbing the replica bridge, BESydney made a lasting impression on all those who visited the AIME 2014 stand.

The overall result was so impressive it was judged to be the Best Stand Over 36m2.

Sydney is the only Australian city to be nominated in the International Destination category of the Visionary Awards 2014. Voting is open until 31 August 2014.
