Medieval Tournament at Arundel Castle with Have-a-Go Archery for budding bowmen!

Arundel Castle in West Sussex is inviting all medieval combat enthusiasts to revel in the excitement of its Medieval Tournament, taking place on 21-22 June.
Set within a tented encampment against a breathtaking Castle backdrop, this event sees the Knights, Squires, Archers and Men-at-Arms of Raven Tor Living History Group locked in a contest questing for glory and triumph in this reconstruction of a 15th Century tournament.

Each competitor will be armed with a wide variety of combat abilities, as the tournament encompasses an array of Medieval fighting methods. With armoured and unarmoured contests, free-style combat, fights using a variety of types of swords and polearms, plus archery contests throughout the weekend, this tournament promises to push even the toughest combatants to their limits, and provide a fascinating show for spectators.

For any burgeoning archers over the age of 8, the Medieval Tournament provides the perfect opportunity to take part in have-a-go archery, conducted throughout the day. Who will be the first visitor to hit the bullseye?

Archery fans can also witness arrows created in real-time by fletchers using authentic medieval tools and methods. Visitors can then marvel as those same arrows are used in competition, designed to challenge the Earl of Arundel’s archers through a series of contests.

Aside from the arenas of combat, the talented historical interpreters will be sharing their knowledge and passion for the 15th Century with live cookery to recreate the sounds and smells of an authentic medieval encampment. Visitors will also be able to immerse themselves in Medieval life with leather craft and wheel braiding demonstrations, storytelling from the period and falconry displays. With something to entertain and excite visitors of all ages, this truly is an event not to be missed.

The Medieval Tournament would have traditionally been used as practice for a forthcoming joust, and at Arundel Castle it is no different, with the Jousting & Medieval Tournament Week taking place on 22-27 July.

Castle Manager, Bryan McDonald comments: “We are delighted to be hosting the Medieval Tournament again this year – to see the members of Raven Tor Living History Group displaying so many skills is fantastic.

“I look forward to seeing visitors young and old trying their hand at archery, and admiring the magnificent birds of prey involved in the falconry. With all the displays and activities this event has to offer, it promises to be an exciting, entertaining and educational experience for our visitors.”
