Gstaad launches new 'Slow' experiences

With people running wild to squeeze as many activities as possible in less time, the Swiss alpine resort of Gstaad acts contre-courant and holds on to its motto, ‘Come up - Slow down’, with a range of new experiences for the 2014 summer season.

Gstaad launches new hiking trail
Get in touch with your inner “Heidi” and discover Gstaad’s new circular hiking trail across the Saanenland and Obersimmental Alps from June 2014. The trail is divided into 13 different hikes for visitors to choose from, easily accessible thanks to lifts and cable cars on the way. Alpine farming, local legends and myths as well as water and energy are just some of the themes each hike will be dedicated to.  Qualified hiking guides will also be on hand to unveil the secrets behind the trails.  

Trekkers will not only enjoy the thrill of great heights but also learn more about the Alps flora - especially rare plants - and geology. To add a pinch of timeless alpine charm, hikers will have the opportunity to stay overnight in rustic mountain huts and inns* where they can relax ahead of another day of outstanding views. Visitors will be hosted on a half board basis and inn-keepers will prepare delicious packed lunches for their guests.  

Open-air cheese fondue to go
Gstaad is all about genuine, simple pleasures and this summer ‘al fresco’ fondue with sky-high views is a must. As of June 2014, the dairy shops of Schönried village and some hotels of the region will provide gourmand visitors with a vintage style ‘fondue backpack’, containing all they need to make fondue on the hoof. Cheese, bread, wine as well as the equipment to light a fire will be included to take to mountain picnic areas. The backpack costs approximately £12 per person. Near the village of Schönried, a large wooden fondue pot will allow up to eight people to share an authentic Swiss lunch in a typically alpine setting.

Dinner in the Sky - Pop-up Cable Car Nights in Gstaad
Those with a head for heights looking for a dinner venue with an edge, will love Gstaad’s cable car evenings, which take ‘high-end’ dining to another level. On 28th June, 24th July, 7th August, 23rd August and 13th September 2014 the Rinderberg Cable Car in Zweisimmen will host pop-up dinners, with locally sourced menus created by the Hamilton Lodge and Derby Restaurant chefs. Visitors to this unusual up-in-the-air restaurant will enjoy a traditional Swiss menu, against the backdrop of staggering views and romantic alpine horn music played from the mountainside.

Prices from CHF 125 per person (approx. £84) based on two sharing the cabin, drinks excluded.
