Football united for ex referee at Emirates Old Trafford

Ex-Premier League referee Mark Halsey, who has successfully battled to beat cancer, recently hosted a glitzy VIP dinner, The Red Card Ball, at Emirates Old Trafford as a thank you to The Christie hospital where he underwent treatment.
The Ball, organised by Kevin Spencer, successfully united the footballing city of Manchester as the blues Manuel Pellegrini and the reds David Moyes were there to help Mark raise funds for The Christie Cancer Charity.

Commenting on the night Mark said: “I would like to say thank you all for supporting this dinner which I hope will now be an annual event. Without the expertise and care of the staff at the Christie hospital I would not be her today. I owe my life to them and will never forget that I was one of the lucky ones.”

Mark added: “I hope that the money we raise tonight will go to help save many lives in the future and find a drug that can combat this disease. Life is for living so enjoy your night.”

Other guests attending on the evening were, ex Manchester City manager Joe Royle, Wigan manager Own Coyle, backroom staff from Everton and Liverpool, Salford Devils stars as well as actors and actresses from Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and Coronation Street.

In a video played to the 450 guests Chelsea Boss Jose Mourinho said: “You are the ‘special one’ Mark. Why? Because you are the only ref I can call my friend.”

On completion of the exquisite dinner football commentator and presenter for BT Sport, Darren Fletcher conducted a Q & A with the city and united managers and Wigan’s Owen Coyle.

The evening ended with a live auction, conducted by sports commentator and MC on the night, John Gwynne, which helped towards raising funds for the Christie Charity.
