1879 Events Management celebrates 100th event delivered at UniSpace Sunderland's National Glass Centre

Catering and event management company, 1879 Events Management, is celebrating after delivering its 100th event at University of Sunderland owned National Glass Centre.

The milestone has been reached within just four months of 1879 Events Management being appointed as caterers to National Glass Centre, which re-opened in June this year following a £2m refurbishment.

Since then 1879 Events Management has worked with the team at National Glass Centre to deliver a broad range of events, including awards ceremonies, launches, corporate events, celebrations and weddings.

The Sunderland-based company provides bespoke catering for all of the venue’s events as well as the new in-house Brasserie.

For the company, which has recently won the Sunderland Echo Portfolio Award for Best New Business, this has meant creating a wide range of formal dinners and bespoke buffets for a combined 75,000 guests.

Gary Hutchinson, Commercial Director at Sunderland AFC, which runs 1879 Events Management said: “It’s been a busy few months at National Glass Centre, both in terms of events and within the Brasserie, which has attracted a wide range of diners from Wearside and beyond.

“With a number of events already booked in for the remainder of the year and into 2014, we’re now looking forward to catering for many more visitors in the months and years to come.”

National Glass Centre, which is part of UniSpace Sunderland, the conference and events arm of the University of Sunderland, originally opened in 1998 and re-launched this summer following a £2m refurbishment, designed to increase its events space and boost its reputation as a leading visitor attraction.

Sharon Olver, Business Development (Events) and Commercial Manager at the University of Sunderland, said:  “National Glass Centre is an iconic building in our UniSpace portfolio and we are delighted that we have reached this milestone so quickly after re-opening; it is a testament to the quality of service in a unique setting.

“1879 Events Management has worked closely with the team at National Glass Centre to deliver this success which is just the start of a new chapter for the venue.”

The fully licenced venue boasts a variety of function rooms, capable of accommodating a range of events from small business meetings and dinners through to weddings and conferences for 300 guests.

1879 Events Management, a subsidiary of Sunderland AFC, was hired to oversee catering for the events arm of the business, as well as the National Glass Centre Brasserie, which opens daily for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.

Among the many events it has managed since the venue re-opened its doors, is a staff rewards evening for Northumbrian Water Group (NWG), which was attended by 135 guests.

Louise Hunter, Director of Corporate Affairs at NWG, said:  “The service provided by the National Glass Centre and 1879 Events Management was excellent.

From initial planning, through to waving our guests goodbye, everyone at the venue was professional and reliable.  All members of their team are friendly, helpful and professional and delivered a great customer experience.”

James Bustard, Director of National Glass Centre said “We have enjoyed unparalleled success since we re-opened in June.  Our redevelopment has proved extremely popular with visitors and this has been echoed in the wonderful response we’ve had from people who want to take advantage of our beautiful new spaces for their events. We look forward to working with many more partners in the future.”
