O2 Media Awards Yorkshire and Humber held at Leeds Metropolitan University’s The Rose Bowl

Well Met Conferencing’s flagship venue, the Rose Bowl, hosted media professionals and special guests including cricket legend Dickie Bird, ITV Calendar news presenter Duncan Wood, and Emmerdale stars Alicya Eyo, Nicola Wheeler and Kelli Hollis, at the O2 Media Awards Yorkshire and Humber on 5 September.

This is the first time that the prestigious awards ceremony, dubbed the Oscars of regional journalism, has been held at Leeds Metropolitan University.  Ten Leeds Metropolitan University journalism students worked with the O2 team to shoot a film summarising the awards as well as helping with photography, interviewing the winners, production, editing and social media.

Ann McCracken, Communications Manager for O2 North, said: “We chose to hold the 2013 Awards at Leeds Metropolitan University for a number of reasons but most importantly to give media students the opportunity to participate in the delivery.  Not as observers but key members of the O2 team. The department has a UK reputation as delivering some of the best degree courses in this specialism and, perhaps not surprisingly, some of most exciting new generations of professionals.”

“The students excelled on the night.  We had teams working across a number of disciplines including photography, video, interviewing and social media.”

“It was a real pleasure to work with the media students and their tutors.  We set high standards to deliver a truly professional and memorable night.  An audience of media professionals set a high bar and Leeds Metropolitan University’s students excelled.”

“O2 believes in young people.  Our Think Big programme helps empower 13-25 year olds to make a difference in their community.  Our O2 Media Awards has a category specifically aimed at identifying Emerging Talent. We look forward to seeing many of the students that took part on the stage receiving O2 Media Awards in their own right in the future.”

Kate Davis, Head of Business Development at Leeds Metropolitan University said: “We are delighted that O2 chose to host their prestigious awards ceremony at the University.  The students who took part were able to really demonstrate their professionalism and the quality of the skills they have learnt, and this is hopefully an opportunity that will turn into the first step on the career ladder for them.  The Rose Bowl is an iconic building in Leeds, which provides a suitably grand backdrop for high profile awards events, but it is also our ability to add value to events through the University’s resource which makes Well Met Conferencing a great option for blue chip clients such as O2. We provided a Yorkshire themed menu, serving pie and peas, mini fish and chips and roast beef and Yorkshire pudding – so the stars didn’t forget where they were!”

The award-winning Rose Bowl is a landmark venue for Leeds and, as well as being home to the Leeds Business School, this state of the art development features the very latest in modern conferencing facilities and design.  Meeting rooms are available for up to 80 people, the largest auditorium will hold 256 delegates and banquets can cater for up to 300 dinner guests.
