Deirdre Wells OBE to address delegates at The AHC

Delegates attending the 10th Annual Hotel Conference (AHC) will have the opportunity to hear from the Head of Tourism at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) on the afternoon of Thursday 17th October.

Following the address by the Rt Hon Hugh Robertson, Minister of State for Sport and Tourism given at last year’s AHC, Deirdre will update delegates on Government’s current activities to promote domestic as well as inbound and outbound tourism across Great Britain. She will discuss current national publicity campaigns and their success to date as well as how Government plans to build on this.

“I firmly believe in the power of culture to drive tourism. Great Britain has a wealth of culture in every city, town and village which can all be harnessed to build on existing tourism activity and encourage further growth. My aim when presenting to delegates at The AHC in October will be to highlight these opportunities to hoteliers and provide practical advice on how they can benefit from the 5th largest sector of our economy: tourism” said Deirdre.

Deirdre has held various high profile positions within DCMS since 1993 including Deputy Head of the International Culture team, Private Secretary to 2 Ministers of State, Relationship Manager for Liverpool Capital of Culture and Programme Manager to the Olympic Legacy Board. From 2001 to 2006 she lead the team which delivered the memorial services for the victims of 9/11, Bali, The Asian Tsunami and London 7/7, and was awarded an OBE for this work in the 2007 Queen’s Birthday Honours. She has been the Department’s Head of Tourism since April 2011.
