“KÖLNDÜSSELDORF – The Meetropolis” is a top German destination

“KÖLNDÜSSELDORF – The Meetropolis” is one of the most popular destinations for international event planners. This is confirmed by the Meeting & Event Barometer 2012/2013 that was presented at the end of May in Frankfurt am Main at the IMEX, Germany’s leading trade fair for meeting and incentive travel. In the category “Metropolitan Regions”, the Meetropolis was the third most popular MICE destination in Germany, behind the regions of Munich and its environs, and Berlin/Potsdam. Compared with the previous year, the Meetropolis moved up one place, gaining a lead on the Rhine-Main region.

12,700 international event planners were interviewed for the survey – the most important study for the German market – and they also cited accessibility and infrastructure as two of the main criteria for choosing a location.

Accordingly the Meetropolis scores points with event planners thanks to two airports close to the respective city centres that serve more than 200 destinations around the world. Furthermore, Frankfurt Airport – a transcontinental hub – is only one hour away by train. These links, as well as over 2,000 train connections per day, and Europe’s densest network of motorways ensure exceptionally good accessibility.

Dr. Eva-Maria Illigen-Günther, Managing Director of Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourismus GmbH, says that the Meetropolis’s good placement in the ranking is also down to the special infrastructure for events that covers the portfolio of not one but two major cities. “No matter whether it’s a scientific convention or AGM, a gala evening or a corporate seminar – in keeping with our slogan ‘We custoMICE your meeting’, in the Meetropolis we can provide the right venue for every occasion.”

“The Meeting & Event Barometer also shows that we score with our environment, our businesses and our scientific institutes. When organizing speciality-related side programmes, many event planners appreciate proximity to the many global players or the diverse illustrious research institutes in the Meetropolis,” adds Stephanie Franke, Director Conventions & Marketing at KölnTourismus GmbH.

According to the survey, 12.5 percent of event planners say that a good reputation as a business and/or scientific location is crucial when it comes to choosing a convention or event destination. Around 80 percent of event planners believe that these location factors will become increasingly important in future. In this regard, German destinations – and in particular the economic metropolises of Cologne and Düsseldorf – perform very well in comparison with other European regions.

The Meetropolis is in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most economically powerful federal state. It is appreciated by both major German companies such as Metro, Bayer or E.ON and over 5,000 foreign companies. Many global companies operate their German or European business from here. The Koelnmesse and the Messe Düsseldorf are, moreover, two of the world’s most important trade fair centres.

To cap it all, North Rhine-Westphalia possesses the densest research landscape in Europe, providing local contact with many innovative thinkers thanks to its extensive network of third-level and research institutes. Illustrious scientific facilities such as the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the affiliated European Astronaut Centre (ESA), five Max Planck Institutes, a branch of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, and many others are based in Cologne and Düsseldorf.
