In Honour of His Majesty! - Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre presents Agong with Cake on his birthday

Cakes and birthdays always go hand-in-hand and it is no different for Royal birthdays. This year (2013), in conjunction with the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim’s Official Birthday celebration on 1 June 2013, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre presented His Royal Highness with an intricate 4-tier cake.

Standing at 5ft in height and 3ft in width, the 48kg sweet presentation was decked predominantly in yellow and gold to align with the Royal colour, and featured the Coat of Arms of all the 14 states and territories as well as the Jalur Gemilang, the Malaysian flag. Themed ‘Mighty Sovereign’, the Centre’s team of four pastry chefs led by Chef Jamaluddin bin Zainal Abidin took almost two weeks to complete the masterpiece although conceptualisation of theme and design began some months ago.

Boasting exotic-flavoured pralines including mango, durian, ginger, chilli and pineapple, the cake is further enriched with mango jasmine and strawberry basil flavoured macaroons. And, in keeping with the patriotic spirit, the macaroons are perfected with hibiscus flavour for that special touch. Hibiscus is the national flower of Malaysia. The royal confection is sealed with caramelised walnut and banana brownies.

According to Chef Jamaluddin who has been making intricate and complex cakes and desserts for over 15 years, creating a cake for His Majesty the King is truly a privilege as it gives him a sense of pride and “an even greater honour to be able to present the cake to His Majesty the King in person on this special occasion.”

In addition to Chef Jamaluddin and his team, the Centre’s General Manager Datuk Peter Brokenshire and Director of Human Resources Rohizat Baharum were present at the cake presentation ceremony held at Istana Negara today.
