The fund aims to ensure that children who are looked after by the Council have access to the same opportunities for personal development - such as extra tuition, sports equipment or driving lessons - as their peers who come from a stable family background.
The scheme is designed to give young people a ‘hand up’ rather than a ‘hand out’ as part of the Council’s wider Borough of Opportunity campaign. Young people will, therefore, be asked to contribute themselves; from helping with their foster carers’ housework to matching any funding given to them with money of their own.
The campaign launched at Hammersmith Town Hall on Saturday and EC&O Venues were proud to provide the first major business donation of £5,000.
“We can’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate the Charitable Trust’s landmark tenth anniversary than supporting such a worthwhile and rewarding cause,” says Anna Golden, Commercial Director at EC&O Venues. “We are really looking forward to working with Hammersmith and Fulham Council and The Opportunity Fund over the coming months and continuing to support their incredible work.”
Cllr Helen Binmore, H&F Council's cabinet member for children's services added: "The generous contribution from EC&O will make a real difference to the lives of our looked after children and has enabled us to get the Opportunity Fund up and running."
Numerous local projects have received support from EC&O’s Charitable Trust since its early beginnings in 2002. These have included Horniman’s Adventure Playground, Children’s Safety Education Foundation, Age Concern – Kensington and Chelsea and the local Victim’s Support.
