Art in the Park XIII at Zürich’s Baur au Lac to feature Allen Jones

From 15 June to 23 August, 2015, Zürich’s Baur au Lac, one of Europe’s grandest hotels and a long-time favourite of the world’s jet set, will be hosting Art in the Park XIII.  This year’s exhibition is devoted to British Pop artist, Allen Jones, and will feature six of his large, stylized sculptures in the landscaped grounds of the hotel.  The sculptures, including “Man About Town” and “Echo,” focus on abstract sinuous forms in interlocking sheets of painted steel.

Born in Southampton in 1937, Allen Jones studied at London’s Hornsey College of Art and the Royal College of Art.  In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, he and his fellow students, like David Hockney and RB Kitaj, were instrumental in the birth of British Pop Art.  After receiving the Prix des Jeunes Artistes at the 1963 Paris Biennale, Jones moved to New York City and lived at the infamous Chelsea Hotel, an epicentre of bohemian life.  In this milieu, his sculptural work evolved into the erotically provocative female forms for which he is best known.  Considered one of the most successful British Pop artists over the past 40 years, Jones has been elected to the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and appointed as a Trustee of the British Museum.

Created and curated by Gigi Kracht (the wife of the sixth-generation owner of Baur au Lac, Andrea Kracht), “Art in the Park” has been a Zurich institution since 2003 – taking place in the hotel’s verdant garden along the shores of Lake Zurich.  Intended to coincide with the start of Art Basel, the annual exhibit features post-modern and contemporary sculptures of renowned artists.
