Meetings Industry Association reports on solid growth and a strong financial year at 25th AGM during International Confex

The meetings industry association (the mia), one of the largest and fastest growing trade associations in the sector, held its AGM at International Confex at Olympia, London on 18th February 2015, providing an excellent opportunity for members to reflect on progress from last year and discuss the growth areas for 2015. 

The mia reported solid membership figures and a healthy financial position for the year ending 31st August 2014, with income exceeding £300k which represented an increase of 9% on 2012/13.  Andrew Mosley, who was elected chairman in April 2014, was keen to focus on the growing sense of optimism currently within the meetings industry with customers noticeably starting to spend money and event attendance up on previous years.   

2015 will see the mia celebrating its 25 year anniversary with special events and initiatives planned throughout the year.  These include the mia 25th Anniversary Conference on 12th June in London, the miaList recognising the top talent in the meetings industry on 28th September and the newly launched Agent Day on 21st May.  Focus for these celebrations will be to raise the profile of mia within the industry whilst championing the importance of community, knowledge exchange and celebrating success.  

The mia’s chairman, Andrew Mosley said, “We have had a strong year financially and demonstrated healthy growth in a large number of our membership programmes.  Our primary objective for the year ahead is to grow membership by increasing the delivery of exceptional standards and valuable benefits for our members, and will predominantly be achievable through AIM and AIM Higher accreditations.  We have introduced a number of marketing opportunities through the AIM website and have seen an increase in the number of venues achieving AIM at Silver and Gold which is very positive.”  

In addition to the education focus for 2015, the mia also announced the launch of a new online research and business tool that will deliver meaningful monthly data to measure the meetings business. Jane Longhurst, mia’s chief executive believes that the launch of Touchstone will provide a real benchmark for the industry going forward.  

“We listened to the industry and to our members.  Our online resources are already an invaluable tool to businesses and individuals and we intend to continue to develop research and reports to deliver valuable business information on competitive sets.  We will be running a free of charge three month taster of Touchstone and all venues will be invited to participate”.
