FITUR 2015 receives 12% more international professional visitors, confirming the thrust of the tourism sector

At the FITUR 2015 Trade Show, exhibitors held more than 5,000 business meetings and closed multiple trade agreements

FITUR, the International Tourism Trade Show organised by IFEMA between 28 January and 1 February at FERIA DE MADRID, has closed its 35th staging with a record in participation which coincides with the best tourism industry figures in Spain and worldwide. We highlight the 12% growth in international professional visitors and the 5% increase in general professional visitor figures, as many as 125,084 professionals from 139 countries. This figure, together with the public visiting the Trade Show during the weekend, reaches a total of 222,551 visitors. It is worth noting that during the five days of the Trade Show, FITUR’s economic impact on the city of Madrid has exceeded 200 million euros in induced revenue.

In regard to business participation, growth was also registered in every parameter. FITUR 2015 welcomed 9,419 exhibitor and represented companies (an increase of 4% compared to the 2014 event), plus 688 main stand holders (+ 13%) from 165 countries. The exhibition area also increased by 4%.

Broad representation by sector
Based on the different sectors represented, 31.3% of exhibitors participating in FITUR 2015 came from the hospitality industry; 27.2% from official bodies; 12.4% were wholesalers, travel agencies and DMCs; 8.3% professional associations; 7% came from the sphere of leisure and culture; 5.4% were service companies; 2.5% transport companies; 2.1% represented incentives, meetings and congresses, with the same percentage for knowhow and technology companies; 1.1% corresponded to health tourism; 0.8% to media and 0.2% to residential tourism.

As for the professional visitors who came to the Trade Show, 23.6% were wholesalers, travel agencies and DMCs; 14.8% came from the hospitality industry; 9.8% were service companies; 8.4% official Spanish bodies; 7.4% represented leisure and culture; 6.4% transport; 5.3% were national tourism offices and foreign promotional institutions, the same percentage as for representatives from incentives, meetings and congress companies; 4.4% were professional associations; 4.2% media; 3.9% knowhow and technology firms; 3.4% residential tourism and 3.3% health tourism.  

These figures, together with the optimistic climate observed at FITUR 2015, create a very positive scenario for the worldwide tourism industry, as confirmed by the figures announced at the Trade Show by both the Secretary-General of the UNWTO, Taleb Rifai, and the President of the Spanish government, Mariano Rajoy. Specifically, and in respect to Spain, our country achieved a historic high in international visitors for the second consecutive year, with more than 65 million in 2014, representing a growth of 7.1% (the highest in the past 14 years) as well as maximum spend levels, with 63.094 billion euros; in other words, 6.5% more. Furthermore, Madrid again consolidated its position as the second worldwide congress destination. The favourable balance for 2014 encourages the optimistic forecasts for consolidating this growth trend in the next two years.
