Destination Edinburgh showcases Scottish conventions in Chicago

Marketing Edinburgh’s Convention Bureau (MECB) will this month join The Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) and the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa on a trip dedicated to attracting large scale business events and conferences from Chicago.
Coinciding the visit with the launch of United Airlines’ nonstop Edinburgh to Chicago service, the group will meet with a number of corporate event planners during their time in the States, with a focus on the large number of associations based in the USA’s third largest city.

Laura Henry, who has recently joined MECB as a Sales Executive, will work together with Rory Archibald from the Sales and Business Development team at the EICC and Stephanie Zahra, an Account Manager at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa to showcase Edinburgh’s attractiveness as a conference and event destination.

While in Chicago the group will also be manning a stand at the Controlled Release Society Annual Meeting, which has recently been confirmed to take place in Edinburgh in July 2015 – bringing an expected 1,700 delegates to the city, with an estimated economic impact of £4.1 million.

Lesley Williams, Head of Business Tourism at MECB said:   “As a fellow ‘best city’, both Chicago and Edinburgh are accredited as excellent places to hold conferences and conventions.

“The launch of United Airlines’ new route means that is now easier than ever for Chicago delegates to enjoy the benefits of the £110m investment which has taken place to expand and enhance Edinburgh’s business tourism facilities over recent years.”

MECB has recently announced its strongest year to date, generating conference wins worth over £90.1 million to the local economy, with Edinburgh’s world class facilities - such as the EICC’s innovative new events space with moving floor system and The Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa’s five star accommodation - being a key draw for organisers.

Attracting new conferences and events from North America and Canada is a key growth objective for Marketing Edinburgh as part of its ongoing three year business strategy.  Over 109 conferences and events are due to take place in Edinburgh between 2014 and 2021, estimated to generate over £117 million for the local economy. This includes internationally respected conventions such as the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation event in 2016 and the Cleft Lip/Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies conference in 2021.
