Ballogie Estate to build 40 bedroom hotel, spa & events venue

Plans are being drawn up for the development of a 40-bedroom hotel, spa and conference and events centre at Ballogie, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire. More than £7 million will be invested in upgrading the former Potarch Hotel as well as building a new spa, wedding and events venue.

Subject to planning, work will start on the Ballogie Hotel & Spa mid next year, with a projected opening time of autumn 2015. The application for planning permission will be made in February.

It is expected that at peak times up to 40 jobs will be created in the hotel, spa and conference and events centre.

Randall Nicol, partner in Ballogie Estate Enterprises which is undertaking the development, explained why the estate has embarked on this significant project.

“We looked at a number of options for developing the hotel and surrounding area. We are passionate about Ballogie and this part of Scotland and we want the new hotel to be a principal attraction for people in the north east, as well as providing a unique destination experience which will attract more visitors to Royal Deeside.

“Having commissioned two indepth economic appraisals and held a public consultation to get local feedback, we decided the best option was to invest in the hotel to bring it up to a very good four-star standard, plus build a new conference and events centre, and a state of the art spa and leisure complex.

“We believe that this development will be unique in Scotland with its rural situation and its level of bedroom, spa and event facilities, coupled with an outstanding food and drink offering.

“The aim is to create a destination around Ballogie Hotel & Spa that will appeal to visitors throughout the UK and further afield. Aberdeen airport is only 45 minutes away; there are regular flights from across the UK, and many European destinations such as Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Paris have direct flights into Aberdeen.”

The spa will match the hotel in terms of the quality of its offering, providing a luxurious, pampering spa experience and treatments for hotel guests and day visitors.

An informal bar-style area and a more ‘formal’ bistro with seating for 60, will be at the heart of the food and drink offering at Ballogie.

The events venue will be capable of hosting around 200 people for receptions or 150 people for weddings, conferences and other celebratory events.

Aberdeen has a thriving business economy and Ballogie Hotel & Spa aims to capitalise on its close proximity to the city, including the flourishing Westhill Business Park, to attract corporate business.

In Aberdeenshire over 1220 people get married each year, equating to 60 weddings in Royal Deeside alone. With the Royal connection (Balmoral Castle, summer home to the Royal Family is only 20 miles away) and its stunning location by Potarch Bridge on the famous River Dee, the owners believe that Ballogie Hotel & Spa will provide a popular destination for all kinds of special occasions.

Claire Bruce, Chair of Destination Management Organisation (DMO) Discover Royal Deeside and Cairngorms, commented: “This development is very good news for Royal Deeside. There’ll be more jobs all year round and it will be heartening to have additional visitors to the area who can enjoy all the attractions and activities that we have on offer.”
