United Airlines have announced the first scheduled non-stop flight between Edinburgh and their Chicago hub, O’Hare International. While Edelweiss air service will operate a new service, twice weekly, between Zurich and Edinburgh. Both routes are due to launch in May 2014. A third new flight route, provided by BMI Regional, from Oslo to Aberdeen, will launch later this month.
Speaking about the new route from Chicago, Bob Schumacher, United Managing Director Sales – UK & Ireland, said “Having recently celebrated 15 years of operations in Scotland, we’re delighted to expand our schedule with seasonal non-stop service to Chicago, United’s home town. Next year’s Homecoming Scotland promotion and Ryder Cup at Gleneagles make it the ideal time to launch these flights, which will offer our customers an increased range of travel choices and opportunities.”
The flights from Zurich to Edinburgh will capitalise on the growing demand from Switzerland for links to Scotland with golf, the Edinburgh festivals and the cultural diversity all credited with the growing popularity.
VisitScotland’s Chairman, Mike Cantlay said: “As a financial hub, Edinburgh is ideally placed to capitalise on the business links afforded by the Zurich connection. The close collaboration between Edelweiss and sister company, Swiss International Air, also means Scotland’s capital city is able to connect with 45 other destinations beyond Zurich.
