EICC leads the events industry in text guiding for blind and vision impaired customers

Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) is leading the events industry in producing a text guide to its facilities for blind and vision impaired customers. Text guides bridge the information gap for people who have difficulty using conventional layout maps by providing a navigational narrative to complement existing signposting tools.

Commenting on the launch of the EICC text guide at the VisitScotland Accessibility Tourism Conference EICC Head of Events, Karen Wood said: “Our new text guide powers text-to-speech, large font and braille applications on computers and mobile devices and can assist delegates get to where they want to be independently and secure in the knowledge that they are following well charted routes around our facilities.”

Glasgow based Describe Online has created the EICC text guide, the first of its kind in the UK events industry, however this is familiar computer based technology for blind and vision impaired users of Transport for London and National Rail services.

Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, said: “The accessible market is potentially lucrative for Scotland’s tourism and events industries and it is fantastic to see the EICC introducing this text guide for the benefit of its blind and visually impaired customers.”
