Best in Show - CNN Travel names Scotland as the World’s Top Travel Destination

Scotland has been named as the world’s top travel destination by CNN Travel. Leading the way with major events and technological advancements, Scotland stood apart from other leading business tourism destinations for its conference, event and hospitality product.

During a £2bn capital investment into tourism infrastructure and as we launch the year of Natural Scotland there is no better time to visit Scotland. Aimed at raising wider business tourism opportunities and awareness of Scotland as a land of outstanding beauty, the Year of Natural Scotland will identify key business aspects with a ‘natural’ message, from food and drink, CSR, outdoor incentive programmes and social itineraries including heritage, culture and sport.

The newly-unveiled Scottish National Trail and Disney film Brave were also cited as key reasons to visit.

Neil Brownlee, Head of VisitScotland’s Business Tourism Unit comments: “This is a tremendous accolade for Scotland and what a great way to start the New Year. 2013 is a massive year for Scotland with a plethora of things to see and do and a host of events to participate in across the country, all under the banner of Year of Natural Scotland.

“Undoubtedly the global success of Brave and the awe inspiring images of Scotland in Skyfall will have whetted the appetite of many potential visitors from home and around the world. Throughout 2013 we must capitalise on this success and position the majesty and magnificence of Natural Scotland on the world stage.”

CNN Travel identified up and coming destinations based on bargains, significant events and important new services, such as added airline routes and major hotel openings.

Beating seven destinations including Amsterdam, Colombia, Slovakia, and Morocco to the accolade, Scotland was also rated above other “trending” locations for 2013 as well as Montenegro, New Zealand, Miami and Japan.
