A Plymouth University graduate has moved up at a city hotel just a year after starting her career there on a work experience placement.
Alexandra Mallett has taken over the responsibility for meetings and events at the Legacy Plymouth International Hotel after impressing in her first year.

The former student of Stoke Damerel Community College and City College Plymouth joined the Marsh Mills hotel on work experience after graduating with a degree in hospitality management in May last year.

Alexandra was then offered a part-time position as meetings and events co-ordinator and has now taken charge of organising conferences, weddings and other business and social functions.

The 22-year-old said: “After graduating, I wanted to gain experience in event management and the Legacy Plymouth International Hotel gave me that opportunity through a placement.

“I learnt so much during my work experience and then in my part-time role and a year on, it’s fantastic to be given the responsibility for meetings and events at the hotel. “I really enjoy the whole aspect of the job and in particular seeing through a conference or a wedding from the initial enquiry to the event itself. I’m looking forward to further developing this side of the hotel’s business.”

One of Alexandra’s first tasks has been to launch themed nights, which are new to the hotel for this Christmas.

A 60s and 70s night will be held on December 13 followed by an 80s revival on December 20, as part of the festive celebrations which includes private parties, festive lunches and a New Year’s Eve gala dinner.

Katie Walton, general manager of the Legacy Plymouth International Hotel, said: “We soon realised what a great asset Alexandra was when she joined us on work experience.

“She grew into her role so well and we’re delighted that she is now overseeing meetings and events at the hotel, which includes building on the very successful Christmas that we enjoyed last year.”
