Abi Young is Storrs Hall’s weddings and events manager, a move which sees her return to her native Cumbria after six years working in the North East
Abi is following in her family’s footsteps with a career in hospitality – her grandparents and parents, who live near Coniston, have always managed pubs, with her mum also working as a wedding and events organiser. Latterly, Abi, aged 27, was events manager at Jesmond Dene House, a four red star, luxury boutique hotel on the outskirts of Newcastle.
Abi added: “I was always interested in the industry - I was actually still in sixth form when I decided this was the career path for me. The turning point came when helping my mum plan weddings and set up big events. It made me realise how suited I was to this kind of job.
“My granddad was in the business too, and was well known to lots of people who live in the Lake District, as well as visitors. He was known as the legendary Phil Broadley, aka Boss. He ran the Farmers Arms at Lowick for 22 years and then finished his landlordship after 17 years at the Tower Bank Arms, which is next door to Beatrix Potter’s former home at Hilltop and featured in some of her books.”
Storrs Halls hosts a huge variety of events each year – from weddings and corporate gatherings, to one-off occasions like the presentation of a British Empire Medal last year to local charity volunteer Marion Giles – an award given as part of the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours list. The historic surroundings and famed views make it a memorable location.
Abi added: "I love organising any type of event, but get really excited about weddings. Spending time with couples, and helping give them their dream day, is the part of the job that I love the most. Storrs Hall’s USP has got to be its amazing lake-shore setting – with a backdrop like this, I can’t wait to start planning the most amazing events.”
Storrs Hall, which is owned by the Hindle family, is a historic country house with a stunning location on the shores of Windermere, close to Bowness. Set in 17 acres, this handsome Georgian Mansion was built in the 1790s. It has 30 bedrooms and suites, nine lodges, two function rooms, a bar with quirky historic features, as well as drawing rooms, open fireplaces and an 80 cover restaurant which overlooks the sweeping lawns, down to the shores of Windermere. It has been managed and operated by Bespoke Hotels since June 2016.
