 Thomas Schoen
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. has announced the appointment of Thomas Schoen as Complex General Manager - Pine Cliffs, a Luxury Collection Resort, Algarve. Schoen has taken the helm at the iconic Algarve resort from longstanding General Manager, James Munro, who has retired from the global hotel company.

A Starwood veteran, Schoen brings more than 25 years’ of hospitality expertise to the new position, most recently as Area Manager, Egypt and General Manager of the Sheraton Cairo Hotel & Casino, a role he has held since January 2013.  At Pine Cliffs, Schoen will oversee operations across the award-winning integrated resort as it prepares to relaunch after an extensive multi-million pound transformation, which will see the debut of all-new accommodation, the addition of a luxurious 1,000sqm spa and multiple new exciting dining destinations. From June 2016, guests will be offered a range of luxurious accommodation options, including the newly renovated Pine Cliffs Hotel and the brand new Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites complemented by Pine Cliffs Residence, all three accommodation options operated by Starwood Hotels & Resorts under The Luxury Collection brand.

Commenting on this announcement, Even Frydenberg, Starwood’s Senior Vice President and Director of Operations Western Europe, said: “As one of Starwood’s most significant hotel developments this year, we are delighted to appoint someone of Thomas’s calibre to oversee our iconic Algarve properties. He brings a wealth of hospitality expertise, gathered throughout his Starwood career, most recently spearheading the operational and business strategies for Starwood Hotels in Egypt - during one of the most challenging periods in the history of the country.  I have absolute confidence that Thomas will bring tremendous success to Pine Cliffs Hotel, Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites and Pine Cliffs Residence as they enter an exciting new chapter.”

Frydenberg added: “I would also like to take this opportunity to recognise the tremendous contribution of Jim Munro in establishing Pine Cliffs Resort as the pre-eminent luxury resort in the Algarve, and extend my very best wishes to him and his family as they return to the UK.”

German-born Schoen’s Starwood career began in 1990 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh. He has since held numerous leadership positions within the company across Europe and Africa, most recently in Egypt where he oversaw operations for 11 hotels across Starwood’s Sheraton, Le Méridien and Westin brands. Previously, he was the Area Manager for Poland and General Manager of the Sheraton Warsaw Hotel, and prior to that position he managed Starwood’s two iconic Luxury Collection hotels in Vienna, Hotel Imperial and Hotel Bristol.
