On 26 July, on the eve of the 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, Macdonald Burlington Hotel on New Street, one of Birmingham’s leading hotels, truly embraced the Olympic spirit when in the presence of an authentic Olympic torch, over 140 leading representatives of the city’s business and cultural community attended a special ‘Wii’ Olympics.

Hosted by general manager Derek McDonagh and sales manager Amy Dixon within the Victorian splendour of the 500 capacity Horton Suite, the ‘Olympic’ events (organised by Eventurous) included a time trial on a bicycle road race simulator and a penalty shoot-out with giant inflatable footballs. Winner and runner-up prizes included overnight stays at a selection of Macdonald Hotels & Resorts throughout the country.

Guest of honour was Dave Heeley, the first blind person in the world to complete 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents. During the evening, 54 year-old Heeley who participated in the Olympic torch relay, announced to guests that he will have a role at the Paralympic Opening Ceremony on 29 August.

And with attendees also including representatives of The Premier Group, manufacturers of the official London 2012 Olympic torches, every guest was thrilled to have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be photographed holding one of the official Olympic torches.

As one of a number of UK-wide Macdonald Hotels to offer guests mouth-watering tastes from a Scottish Steak Club menu, throughout the evening guests also enjoyed servings of the highest quality cuts of beef and lamb, sourced from accredited Scottish farms. Fish was supplied and cured by the award winning John Ross Junior in Aberdeen, reflecting Macdonald Hotels & Resorts group-wide promise to serve only the finest freshest cuisine, always prepared from whole raw ingredients.

Reflecting on the success of the evening, general manager Derek McDonagh, commented: “As a destination of choice for corporate, conference and leisure guests to Birmingham, at Macdonald Burlington Hotel we always strive to find new and exciting ways to showcase the high quality of our service and facilities.

“This includes our highly central location within striking distance of the NEC, complementary WiFi with the option of adding extra, dedicated bandwidth up to 100Megabytes per second, a choice of 16 superbly equipped conference and meeting spaces and first class dining within the Scottish Steak Club. We will also shortly complete our investment in the refurbishment of all 114 hotel bedrooms.

“With the whole country gripped by Olympic fever, our ‘Olympic’ event offered the perfect opportunity to thank our partners and enjoy hosting many representatives from across Birmingham’s business and cultural community.

“All of the staff at Macdonald Burlington Hotel were proud to once again welcome Dave Heeley back as our surprise and very special guest. He is an inspiration to us all and everyone on the night clearly relished their once in a lifetime opportunity to hold aloft an authentic London 2012 Olympic Torch.”
