Room Mate Hotels opens a third design hotel in Barcelona

Room Mate Carla guest room with terrace

Room Mate Carla has 81 rooms and is designed by architect Tomás Alía Centrally located on Calle Mallorca, a few steps from Paseo de Gracia

Room Mate Hotels, the hotel chain bringing an innovative approach to the tourism industry, founded and chaired by Kike Sarasola, bolsters its presence in Barcelona with the opening of its third hotel in the Catalonian city. Room Mate Carla joins the existing properties of Room Mate Emma and Room Mate Pau, with the opening of Room Mate Anna, a fourth hotel, expected for late summer 2016.

Room Mate Carla is centrally located on Calle Mallorca, a few steps from the Paseo de Gracia, one of the city’s most important shopping and business areas. The hotel has been designed by the architect Tomas Alía, who previously worked with the group on other projects, including Room Mate Oscar, Madrid and Room Mate Aitana, Amsterdam.

Guests of Room Mate Carla can enjoy the services found in all Room Mate Hotels, such as breakfast served until noon and the innovative free WiFi Service WiMate, which provides free WiFi for guests not only in the hotel itself but also throughout the city.

“Barcelona is a global tourism destination and the city epitomises the Room Mate spirit. Our objective is to have six hotels here by 2017, creating our strongest presence in any territory,” states Sarasola, the president and founder of Room Mate Hotels.

INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT BY TOMÁS ALÍA
The building, which previously housed the 987 Hotel, was redesigned by Alía to create a Room Mate hotel that meets all the chain’s high quality standards. Alia says: “It’s always a pleasure to work with Room Mate Hotels because this is a group that likes to be innovative and break the mould; from a design perspective, we have the freedom to create our own projects.”

The project honours the city’s great architects, and in line with Barcelona’s design traditions, it incorporates the influences of industrial themes, ceramics, celebrated trencadis mosaics, and Gaudí’s modernism, as well as reflecting the cosmopolitan aspects and urban development that the city has experienced over the last four decades.

Notable eye catching features include a large vertical structure at the front desk area made up of dozens of enameled ceramic pieces, all handcrafted by traditional methods, adding a sense of space. The lobby colour scheme is a mix of bold blue, silver and taupe with armchairs and sofas in striking geometric shapes designed exclusively for the hotel.

The bedrooms focus on comfort with a design scheme consisting of white interiors for the furniture with contrasting bright colours and bold shapes on the raised headboards, walls and rugs.

A fourth opening in Barcelona by Room Mate Hotels is expected in late summer 2016. Room Mate Anna, designed by Lorenzo Castillo, will be located at the intersection of Calle Aragón and Paseo de Gracia, and offer 81 rooms.

With 23 establishments and a presence in six international markets, the chain plans to open eight additional hotels throughout 2016 and 2017 in cities that include Rotterdam, Istanbul, and Madrid. This will allow the company to grow its size and reach a total of more than 4,000 rooms, while establishing its global presence.
