Inkaterra celebrate 40 years of sustainable tourism

Journey to the heart of Peru's most mesmerising destinations with the 'Ruby Adventure Package'

In celebration of their 40th anniversary, pioneers of eco tourism, Inkaterra, will launch a ‘Ruby Package’ itinerary, including forty celebrated activities, across four of their luxury lodges. The nine-day adventure will take travellers from the heart of the Amazon rainforest, to the majestic Machu Picchu, from the cobbled streets of Cusco, to the rolling hills of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Like the precious stone, Inkaterra are a talisman of passion, dedicating the past forty years to protecting the flora, fauna and local culture of the Peruvian people.

The journey begins at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, a luxury eco-lodge comprising of 35 wooden cabañas, deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest of Southern Peru. Here, explorers meander through winding jungle trails, discover the flora and fauna, scents and solitude of one of the world’s most remote and bio-diverse rainforests.

After a treetop adventure on the 344m-long Canopy Walkway, 29 meters high above the jungle floor, weary travellers can relax in a flowering bath; bubbling water enriched with medicinal herbs, flowers and aromatic essences. A boat ride to Lake Sandoval offers guests the chance to rub shoulders with the resident river otters, howler monkeys and side-neck turtles.

Upon arriving at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, veiled in the mists of the mystic Andean Cloud Forest, explorers unearth the secrets of the flora and fauna after dark, with a twilight walk. A trickling waterfall guides guests along winding forest trails as they meld with the sacred energy of the mountains, discover the world’s largest collection of native orchids – some 372 species - in their natural habitat and gaze up at a clear, star peppered sky at the Rocotal Observatory. After marvelling at the Machu Picchu ancient citadel, one of the new 7 Wonders of the World, tired trekkers can indulge in bespoke foot therapy treatment, before a purification session in the Andean Sauna, using stones heated in a Cloud Forest Hut.

Travellers then head to the Sacred Valley of the Incas for a two-night stay at the recently opened Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba. For laid-back wanderers and adventure enthusiasts alike, the hotel takes guests on a historic journey, from Chinchero (Inca-Colonial village) to Maras (inca pink salt mine) and Moray (Inca circular terraces), bird watching in the lush hills of the valley, to an enchanting twilight trek. A tour of the property’s ecological farm will leave guests educated and informed before heading to their luxury suites, to soak up the panoramic views over the sprawling wide valley beyond.

A private transfer takes guests to the ancient capital, and spiritual heart of the Inca Empire, to a colonial manor in the heart of Cusco, Inkaterra La Casona. Explore the stalls scattered across Cusco’s cobbled streets, brimming with street food, alpaca wool and a rainbow of indigenous textiles. After strolling through the bohemian San Blas district, travellers will take a relaxing Andean Hot Stones Massage at the Hotel´s Yacu Therapy Room, whereby stones from the river are bathed in warm water and anointed in fragranced oils, before being placed on the energy points of the body. To complete the itinerary, guests enjoy an intimate dinner in the 16th Century manor house – the perfect opportunity to reflect on the experiences and delights of Peru encountered.
