INTERIOR DESIGN BY PATRICIA URQUIOLA
The design for Room Mate Giulia is by the award-winning architect Patricia Urquiola, who lives and works in Milan and has taken a personal interest in the project. Urquiola is holder of a Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, and accolades such as ‘Designer of the Year’ by prestigious publications including Wallpaper, Home and Elle Decor.
For this hotel, she references the city of Milan and has taken inspiration from typical Italian domestic spaces and added a vintage touch to create welcoming, familiar surroundings where guests can enjoy the hotel as if they were at home.
For the hotel lobby floor, Urquiola selected the same pink marble as found in the Duomo of Milan. The predominance of this colour in her designs has become one of her trademarks. Throughout the hotel, guests can admire works of different Milanese artists, photographers and illustrators.
Furniture and accessories for the hotel have been supplied by Cassina Contract, including beds, tables, sofas, desks, dressers for bathrooms, mirrors and curtains. “Working with Room Mate has been a wonderful experience; I’ve had complete freedom. Room Mate Giulia expresses the essence of Milan; it’s new, fresh, fun and welcoming. The hotel embodies the city through its colours and materials. Room Mate Giulia has a lively personality and promises guests a unique experience in Milan,” says Urquiola.
Room Mate Hotels is continuing its plan for international expansion with a further 10 openings in 2016 including Rotterdam, Florence, Rome, Paris, Barcelona and Madrid, providing more than 4,000 rooms.
