The Gainsborough Bath Spa celebrates its official grand opening

On Tuesday 29th September 2015, The Gainsborough Bath Spa welcomed 250 high-profile local and international guests to celebrate its Official Grand Opening, including Leader of the Council, Councillor Tim Warren, MP Ben Howlett, Mayor William Sandry, fashion icon Jimmy Choo and the hotel’s interior designer Alexandra Champalimaud, of New York’s Champalimaud Design.

The only member of The Leading Hotels of the World in the South West of England, this holistic landmark is one of YTL Hotel’s most significant openings to date. Today, The Gainsborough Bath Spa stands as YTL Hotels first Classic Hotel in Europe as well as the sole hotel to have exclusive access to Bath’s natural thermal mineral waters.

Embracing British pomp and ceremony with a lively Malaysian twist – a nod to the heritage of the hotel’s owning family – guests were treated to a display of ancient traditions to bless the hotel with prosperity. Surrounded by a group of drummers, guests were led on a Lion Dance procession to The Gainsborough Bath Spa behind a Chinese dragon.

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Yeoh Tiong Lay, Chairman of YTL Corporation, launched proceedings with a ceremonial ribbon cutting, followed by flowing champagne toasts and Asian-fusion canapés by Michelin Starred Chef Johann Lafer, who has lent his name to the hotel restaurant.

With guests gathering in the beautiful Chapel Room, Wessex Water chairman Colin Skellett and Tan Sri Francis Yeoh led a series of speeches to mark the occasion. Speaking on the night, Colin stated; ‘Tonight we celebrate the opening of YTL’s latest hotel. A major step in making Bath, once again, a major European spa city. I am pleased that this latest YTL investment will play its part alongside Thermae Bath Spa in growing the local economy and putting Bath even more on the international map.’

A ten thousand pound donation to St John’s Hospital, the hotel’s designated charity dedicated to caring for the local community, was then presented. Guests were subsequently invited to explore the hotel and enjoy the opulent rooms, facilities and beautiful Spa Village, where a hypnotic display of the hotel’s signature aquatic treatment, Freedom, took place accompanied by the soothing melodies of a harp. Musical displays were performed by Malaysian YouTube sensation, Elizabeth Tan and her band singing up-tempo Malaysian songs, whilst Jazz legend Freddy Cole, brother of Nat ‘King’ Cole, and his Quartet treated guests to a selection of Smokey Jazz classics.

Talking about the Grand Opening, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Yeoh Tiong Lay, leading Malaysian businessman and founding member of YTL Corporation, commented; “We are delighted to open such a prestigious property in the historic city centre of Bath. The Gainsborough Bath Spa marks the company’s first Classic Hotel in the UK and serves to only strengthen the brand’s affinities with areas of authentic natural and cultural beauty. We are very excited to be the only hotel in the UK with access to Bath’s natural thermal waters.”

The Gainsborough Bath Spa is the newest addition to the YTL Hotels portfolio of luxury properties. The 99-room hotel is ideally located along Beau Street, minutes away from the city’s historical attractions, shopping and restaurant districts, and directly opposite the Thermae Bath Spa. The UK’s first and only hotel to have exclusive access to the natural thermal waters, this historic property is located just a five-minute walk from the Bath Spa train station, and a 90-minute train journey from London.

Nightly rates at The Gainsborough Bath Spa start from £285 on a room-only basis.
