The Arora Group launch apprenticeship and recruitment campaign for InterContinental® London – The O2

The Arora Group, owner and operator of the forthcoming InterContinental® London – The O2, has partnered with GLLaB, (Greenwich Local Labour and Business) to launch their recruitment and apprenticeship campaign in a large-scale initiative designed to encourage employment from within Greenwich and its surrounding area.
The collaboration with GLLaB and the Royal Borough of Greenwich council sees a commitment from the Arora Group to provide at least 40% of all jobs within the new luxury InterContinental® London – The O2 to those living in Greenwich. 

Opportunities include management and operations positions in all departments including Food & Beverage, Kitchen, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Guest Services, Meetings and Events and The Spa within one of London’s largest and most significant hotel developments.  It is anticipated that in excess of 400 people will be recruited via a series of assessment centres across the borough after pre-employment training and interviews facilitated by the Arora Group and GLLaB.   

In addition, the privately-owned hotel company is working with GLLaB and local colleges to offer work experience placements and to launch the Arora Apprenticeship Scheme across the hotel.  Assessment centres have been set up in Greenwich to select a minimum of 25 people to join Arora’s apprenticeship programme, providing them with an annual salary for on the job training, a nationally-recognised qualification and progressive career development within the InterContinental® London – The O2 and the Arora Group.   

Once selected, apprentices will be assigned a training provider to undertake external learning through GLLaB’s training partner, JACE, progressing to Intermediate Apprenticeship at Level 2 after 12 months, equivalent to 5 GCSE’s. Apprentices then have the opportunity to complete an Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3 and a Higher Apprenticeship at Level 4/5 providing them with the equivalent of a Foundation level degree.

Commenting on the strength of Arora’s apprenticeship programme is current apprentice Rikki Payne who, alongside studying for a Building Service Level 3 BTEC at Uxbridge College, is gaining valuable hands on vocational experience in all areas of property maintenance and engineering across the Arora group of hotels, “The apprenticeship opportunity offered by the Arora Group has been amazing for me both personally and professionally and I can’t thank them enough for the experience - during my time, I have gained vital skills in all areas of engineering, including electrics, plumbing and refrigeration, which has given me the confidence and skills-set to carve out my own specialism within hotel maintenance when I graduate.”   

Payne added, “The Arora Apprenticeship Scheme is not just a placement - the company is continuing to expand year on year so I have the benefit of working with both new and older systems to enhance my knowledge and I have the opportunity to grow.”  

The InterContinental® London – The O2 recruitment and apprenticeship launch was held at The O2, on 3rd June, hosted by Hasham Soliman, General Manager of The InterContinental® London – The O2 and Anne Davey, HR Director at the Arora Group with GLLaB and dignitaries from Royal Borough of Greenwich.  

InterContinental® London – The O2 opens winter 2015 on the Greenwich Peninsula, opposite Canary Wharf and adjacent to The O2.  The impressive 18-storey luxury hotel features 453 spacious guest rooms - including 50 suites - as well as a 4,500sqm+ dedicated conference centre with a 3,100sqm pillar-free ballroom and 1,600sqm pre-function space overlooking the river Thames.  With a myriad of facilities for leisure and entertainment, the hotel boasts a fine dining and all-day dining restaurant, rooftop Sky Bar and lounge with Tea Salon inspired by Greenwich’s naval heritage.  In addition, the iconic InterContinental features a luxury spa with indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi and treatment rooms for a range of signature brand beauty and relaxation therapies.
