Highbullen Hotel, Golf and Country Club launches etiquette courses for game shoot beginners

North Devon’s Highbullen Hotel, Golf and Country Club is deep in the heart of game shoot country, and has long been a blot hole for shoot parties who want the comfort and luxury of this award winning hotel at the end of a long day’s sport. This year, as the season draws to an end, Highbullen has created a weekend break ideal for the shooting-newbie; those men and women who have been inspired by this season to join in the fun of a game shooting weekend, but also want the confidence to know they will fit in perfectly. 

Highbullen’s Etiquette of Game Shooting: Course for the Novice is a two day residential course designed to get beginners ready to handle anything during a shooting weekend.  Each course will have eight participants and prices start at £550 per person (in a shared room) for an out of season course, and £750 for an in season course (October-January).  The course, accommodation and all meals (including two “shoot dinners”) are included in the price.

“Over the past couple of seasons we have seen the popularity of game shooting increasing, with more and more guests staying at the hotel for shooting parties. This season we have also had feedback from several guests that they would love to get involved in shoots, but are just too worried about ‘not doing it right’ because they have not done it before,” comments Ronnie Orr of Highbullen.

“With so many new people coming to the sport, people who have not had the benefit of shooting all their lives, understanding the etiquette of a shooting weekend is becoming increasingly important, which is why we have launched this course. People want to know everything from what to wear, to what to shoot, to what to tip and even what to eat!  Our course covers all of this, and also allows guests to take part in two afternoon shoots.”

The courses will take place over two full days (two nights) starting on any day as long as a group of eight is booking.  Additional nights for those travelling can be booked from £145 per night.

The course will be given by Richard Chapple, ex-England Clay Shot, licenced instructor and gun dealer as well as a regional officer for the British Society of Shooting and Conservation. 

The first morning will contain a series of useful sessions outlining all the key information needed for a weekend’s shoot including: preparation for the first day of shooting – including clothing advice and social deportment;  health and safety; principles of where and when to shoot; identification of bird species and thanking your hosts.

The afternoon will comprise a 1.5 hour clay shoot, simulated driven pheasant drive with 50 clays and full instruction from Richard Chapple.

In the evening guests will enjoy a five course shooters’ menu which, in season, will have an emphasis on game, with matching wines.  Guests will be talked through the menu and wine choices by a Highbullen expert.

The second day of the course aims to deepen knowledge and develop skills.  A local shoot owner and manager, Mr Jeremy Boyde, will explain the workings of a driven shoot, what makes a great shoot and how to make the most of a shoot weekend.  

In the afternoon, course participants will visit a local estate (used exclusively by Highbullen during the season) to take part in a pheasant or partridge drive.  Out of season, a fully simulated shoot using clays will be organised. 

A shoot dinner will also be provided on the second night. Costs are:
In season (October-January inclusive)
