New spa development at Staffordshire’s Three Horseshoes Inn & Country Hotel

The Three Horseshoes Inn & Country Hotel in Blackshaw Moor, Leek, on the edge of the Staffordshire Peak District, will be opening an innovative new spa, The Mill Wheel Spa, in spring 2015.
The Three Horseshoes in Blackshaw Moor was granted planning permission last October to build a substantial extension to the premises which would provide 222 square metre spa facilities, an entrance canopy and five hot tubs outside bedrooms making The Mill Wheel Spa a true destination spa.

Director Steve Kirk says of the development: "The new building is being constructed adjacent to our present building. We have been working on the project since February 2014 and work will be complete March 2015. It will be a unique spa with lots of equipment and innovations. These are exciting times for the business and this will also bring in more leisure guests and attract more weddings. This will also help with tourism in the Staffordshire Moorlands. We will also be helping local businesses as local contractors have been employed in the construction scheme."

The project has received help from Staffordshire Moorlands MP Karen Bradley, leader of the district council Sybil Ralphs and Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

Mrs Bradley said: "One of the best things about being an MP is being able to use my connections to benefit constituents and local businesses, and I'm really pleased that I've been able to help in this way.  "It's great news that The Three Horseshoes has been awarded money from the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Growth Fund as it will create jobs and bring tourism to Blackshaw Moor.  I know that the new spa will be a huge success and I hope to be among the first visitors when it's complete!"

Leader of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, Sybil Ralphs, said: "The Kirk family have a proven record for only delivering the best for their clientele, and this latest venture is no exception.

"It will be a sophisticated and unique attraction, and a first for the Moorlands, and I wish them every success in this their latest venture."

The Kirk family have worked with Neil Owen at Spa Vision, suppliers of premium spa equipment and products, to incorporate a number of unique and innovative features from Haslauer into the spa.  This includes:

The Beach Hut experience replicates the positive benefits of being on a beach in the sun in a comfortable, safe and relaxing environment, is just one of the innovative and exciting spa experiences The Mill Wheel Spa will feature.  Lying on a bed of warm sand, this 25 minute experience takes guests from darkness to sunrise to peak sunshine and then sunset.  Relaxing music and essential oils complete the ‘holiday’ experience.  It is the perfect way to top up Vitamin D levels helping beat winter blues and this can even stimulate the metabolism.

Other new spa experiences, will include the BrechelBath, an attractive alternative to a “conventional” sauna. This wood-panelled room which is a replica of an Alpine Brechel cabin, enables guests to breathe in the spicy goodness of the forest. The gentle increase in temperature and the herbal steam shots activate intense perspiration without straining the circulation. Additionally, the fir tree needles on the floor boost the circulation in the soles of the feet by a soft massaging effect whilst a genuine 'fir tree scent' miraculously unblocks the respiratory passages.

With the Stonebath, mineral stones are heated in the oven, the basket containing the hot stones is dipped into a basin filled with cold water and the sizzling stones set free all the valuable minerals along with the steam to fill the room. This extraordinary “Steam bath experience” creates a feeling of wellbeing.

Central to the spa’s thermal area, is the Millwheel shower, also a UK first, turned by water power.  The water pours out from the shovels in intervals, alternatively warm and cold, a welcome refreshment after visiting the hotter experiences.

Other facilities include an outdoors hydrotherapy pool, a plunge pool, a beautiful outdoor spa garden and three treatment rooms offering a range of natural beauty and wellbeing treatments from celebrities’ favourite, Heaven by Deborah Mitchell and alpine pioneer, Kurland.  Five new Garden Rooms are also being developed each featuring a private garden complete with personal cedar wood hot tub.

The ethos of The Mill Wheel Spa will reflect The Three Horseshoes’ farming location and market town history. The spa is being constructed using local stone and it will incorporate natural foliage.

The development of The Mill Wheel Spa will make The Three Horseshoes Inn & Country Hotel a true spa destination whether guests are visiting for a treatment only,  spa day or spa break.  Spa guests can also look forward to an award winning 2 Rosette restaurant, The Brasserie, offering delicious local food from an imaginative menu. The location means the views from the gardens are magnificent with breath-taking views of the Staffordshire Peak District, Tittesworth Reservoir and the rock formations of the Roaches. Guests can enjoy local walks and experience beautiful views of the surrounding Peak District. Or even venture to the stunning Chatsworth House, The Potteries, The town of Buxton or even Alton Towers.
