Jade Mountain & Anse Chastanet invite guests to capture the Caribbean through their own lens

Photography Workshop returns to two of Saint Lucia’s much-loved luxury five-star resorts

This September, luxury resorts Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet in Saint Lucia, have announced the return of their ever-popular photography workshops, led by two of the world’s leading photographers and experts, internationally acclaimed American photographer and photojournalist, Joe McNally and photo book author, Rafael Concepcion. During this five-day workshop, budding photographers staying at either hotel, will have an opportunity to learn lighting, storytelling, and camera techniques, all the while basing themselves in this stunning location in the heart of the Caribbean.

Taking place from September 14th to 19th, 2014, this special photographic workshop led by Joe and Rafael will teach guests of Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet about the language of light, different flash techniques, as well as provide them with tips on how to travel with a minimum of gear, and of course, how to produce stunning pictures and portraits overall. Workshops will be held classroom style and on location, all over the resorts’ 600 acre stunning Caribbean beach front estate.

Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain offer stunning views of Saint Lucia and undoubtedly reflect the island’s indigenous beauty.  Joe McNally has had a longstanding photographic love affair with both the resorts and says, “There is no more beautiful place to shoot, and to learn about photography and light.”

The first workshop beginning on Monday, September 14th will establish objectives and review each student’s portfolios.  Joe McNally will present slides based on lighting strategies that emphasize the use of all manner and colour of light to create effective portraiture and storytelling pictures. After lunch, Rafael Concepcion will lecture guests about capturing video with a DSLR; explaining how to setup their camera for quick video capture, what tools of the trade to use for capturing great video, and quick workflows for capturing footage while making great still images.

On Tuesday, September 15th, the workshop will concentrate on dealing with bad light. Around midday, the class will venture outside in the bright, harsh sun of the tropics. Strategies for using bad light to the camera’s advantage will be discussed and demonstrated. The afternoon demo will be on location and include an additional discussion of shooting interior/exterior environments effectively, with emphasis on using flash to balance exposure zones encountered in the open air rooms of Jade Mountain.

Wednesday’s session, September 16th, will focus on selecting edit images and visiting the nearby Soufriere fire station.  Firefighters make wonderful iconic portrait subjects, and Joe McNally has a long relationship with the department. Strategies and demos will be offered to guests on how to take single and group portraits on location, using their surrounding environment to tell a story.

On Thursday, September 17th there will be a special session on HDR taught by Rafael Concepcion.  This will educated guests about which images make great HDR, as well as illustrate the camera technique needed to ensure guests have the correct source files. After the hardware is complete, Rafael will go over the entire HDR process from a software point of view. The afternoon will be spent in the jungle of Anse Chastanet’s Anse Mamin plantation. Here, a demonstration will be given by Rafael in the art of creating images that move, and portrait techniques set within the intense, beautiful jungle environment.

On the final day, Friday September 18th, guests will spend time reviewing techniques, critiquing work and discussing business strategies. In the evening, the class will gather  together on the beach for a spectacular "flambo" sunset session, with fires, models and flash lighting with gels.

Joe McNally is currently one of the bestselling authors and educators in all of digital photography worldwide, and listed by American Photo as one of the 100 Most Important People in Photography.
