$50m doubled the size of Mafraq Hotel in Abu DhabiA hotel in Abu Dhabi that deserves consideration for MICE events is the Mafraq. Its name signifies a ‘crossroads’ and the 4-star property is located strategically 20 minutes outside the rapidly growing city. It is easily accessible from Abu Dhabi and Dubai and from both airports.
Originally a 121-room hotel, the Mafraq was expanded into a 250 room property when a massive US$50m was spent on a complete re-modelling. This embraced the creation of five new f&b outlets and the dedication of a whole wing to meeting and banqueting facilities. This now has a private entrance to the Baniyas Ballroom that can accommodate events for up to 250 people. There are also two additional meeting rooms and an executive lounge.
The new design also introduced a 5,000sqm green courtyard that divides the Mafraq into two wings. A 300sqm outdoor pool is set among palm trees in the courtyard. The water is heated in the winter and cooled in the summer.
Mafraq, which is also the name used to denote the local area, is now a brand that the owners, The National Investor (TNI), an Abu Dhabi-based investment company, are keen to develop as a significant hotel brand. Rob Rowell, V-P of Real Estate, sees the name as symbolic of a crossroads connecting the old with the new, traditional hospitality with modern facilities.
Leisure amenities at the hotel include a floodlit tennis court, two squash courts, badminton, volleyball and private instruction in tennis, swimming and the martial arts.
