The exclusive event was held in the stunning atrium of luxurious Grosvenor House Apartments by Jumeirah Living on Park Lane – which was turned into a 100m² court for the evening, transforming the seven-storey vaulted atrium, usually known for its striking and contemporary décor.
Guests of the evening were able to join stars of the tournament in this unrivalled setting, as former British Number One Andrew Castle and former World Number Five Henri Leconte mingled and took to the court for a rally or two. The order of play for the tournament was also announced, and the trophy unveiled.
Created by Lasvit, a leading designer and manufacturer of bespoke light fittings and feature glass installations, the new Statoil Masters trophy draws inspiration from famous traditional tennis trophies. The traditional shape has been achieved with the help of the precise craftsmanship of Bohemian glass blowers, converted to a contemporary crystal sculpture with a hand cut on the surface to symbolise an imprint of history.
Jumeirah have made sure that the Astroturf tennis court will not go to waste, choosing instead to donate it to activeNewham, a local programme involving residents in sports and volunteering to strengthen the community. Working closely with StreetGames, a sports charity that changes lives and communities, the new high quality tennis court will be a fantastic way of linking local grass roots tennis programmes with legacy facilities on the Olympic Park.
Fiona Miley, Sports and Activities Manager for activeNewham said, “On behalf of activeNewham I would like to thank everyone at Jumeirah for this fantastic tennis court. activeNewham works very closely with StreetGames and the Lawn Tennis Association to provide opportunities for young people to access sport on their doorstep. This court will mean we can take tennis out to young people, adults, families and people with disabilities in the Borough to experience the joy of tennis for themselves, and encourage on-going participation in sport and physical activity.”
Derek Picot, Vice President of Europe for Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts commented, “We are extremely proud to have partnered with IMG and the Statoil Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall. Last night’s event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate an iconic tournament synonymous with London, from the prestigious surroundings of one of our three London properties, Grosvenor House Apartments by Jumeirah Living. And we’re thrilled to be able to contribute to activeNewham’s provision of tennis opportunities through the donation of our tennis court.”
