Andaz Liverpool Street goes ape with Old Spitalfields Market

Tis the season to be jolly and there is nowhere more festive to spend this Christmas than East London! Andaz Liverpool Street hotel has announced a festive Christmas collaboration with East London’s iconic Old Spitalfields Market which will be unveiled in late November. Andaz will literally be going Ape this season and feature a golden gorilla Christmas window installation, designed by Old Spitalfields Market.

In contrast to the famous winter wonderland windows of London’s West End shops, the Christmas windows of the 5-star boutique hotel will be lighting up the East London streets! Old Spitalfields Market has been tasked with dressing the Christmas windows of Andaz Liverpool Street in a whole new light by using inspiring local talent to channel the attitude of London’s East End with a larger-than-life funky monkey twist. The festive collaboration will see the hotel’s windows and some public spaces transform into a series of installations to reflect the spirit of the hotel, Old Spitalfields Market and the unique character of the East End.

The eccentric ape windows will portray different species – from a life size Gold Gorilla in the corner window challenging the traditional Santa Claus motif, to a mistletoe bearing Barrel Monkey sculpture cascading down the impressive Rotunda - inspired by the iconic 1965 toy. Chosen for their fun, free and joyful reputation, the playful and creative fusion of apes and Christmas provides an eclectic parallel to Andaz Liverpool Street, a contemporary 21st century boutique hotel housed within a traditional Victorian building, and Old Spitalfields Market, the cultural hub of the area.

Continuing the monkey atrium inspiration through to the hotel’s Eastway brasserie windows, a singular Barrel Monkey, especially designed by Ravensbourne College, will hang arm in arm to subtly represent the funky festive partnership. Upon entering Andaz Liverpool Street, guests will be whisked away from any traditional Christmas setting and instead be greeted by ape themed cocktails, cakes and savoury treats to warm the cockles.

Bobby Patmore from Inspitalfields, who is curating the project on behalf of Old Spitalfields Market, says of the collaboration, “Andaz Goes Ape is a fantastic partnership that really pulls together two of the greatest institutions in the area. Andaz Liverpool Street, for its old-meets-new charm, is the ultimate host for a project by Old Spitalfields Market, which has its own rich heritage and cutting-edge creative feel. It’s been such a pleasure to bring a sense of mischief and fun to a Christmas display and we can’t wait for the big unveil!”

Carrie Wootten, Head of Commercial Development, Ravensbourne College, “Having such a great platform as Andaz Liverpool Street with some of the strongest footfall in the East End was too good to miss. Based in Greenwich, we are East-enders through and through and being invited to create the 3D monkeys was an honour. It’s great to see the local area being supported through projects like this.”

From fanciful banana-themed pies, to tasty King Kong cocktails and eye-catching ape displays, guests can’t help but go Ape and get into the Christmas spirit at Andaz Liverpool Street.
