The Royal Mail Hotel celebrates its prestigious wine list with a string of awards

The highly acclaimed Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld, nestled at the southern tip of Grampians National Park, is celebrating a string of fresh awards which further cement its reputation as a premier food and wine destination in Victoria. At the Australian Wine List Awards, held at The Hilton in Sydney on Monday afternoon, the Royal Mail Hotel was awarded the best listing of Victorian wines in Australia.

This follows on from recent international accolades including the US Wine Spectator’s Grand Award, a prestigious three star ranking along with a Jury Prize from the UK’s Fine Wine awards and two places in the Australian Wine List Awards’ Hall of Fame in 2015 for being both a national winner and three time best country wine list.

The Australian Wine List Awards’ Best Wine List Victoria recognises the best wine list in metropolitan and regional Victoria. Judging criteria takes in to account quality, innovation, wines by the glass, balance, pricing, suitability to cuisine and ability to navigate.

In early July, the Royal Mail celebrated its US Wine Spectator ‘Grand Award’, the publication’s highest accolade exclusively reserved for restaurants that show an uncompromising, passionate devotion to the quality of their wine programs.

Adding an additional feather to the Royal Mail’s cap, at the UK’s World of Fine Wine Awards held on 12 July this year, the Royal Mail was awarded the top ranking of three stars. Furthermore, the Royal Mail Hotel was charged with a Jury Prize, an award which saw the hotel selected by the judges as having one of the top 50 wine lists in the world.

The string of awards comes as no surprise with the Royal Mail boasting one of the most comprehensive and varied wine collections in the world. The stellar collection includes the Southern Hemisphere’s largest privately owned collections of Bordeaux and Burgundy, valued at approximately $2.8 million and an impressive inventory of more than 26,000 bottles of local and imported wines, which translates to a 100+ page wine list for guests.

The Royal Mail’s other recent accolades include:
• Two Hats, The Age Good Food Guide 2015, 2016,
• Regional Accommodation and Regional Restaurant of the Year, TAA Awards for Excellence, 2016,
• Best Hotel Wine List (Worldwide), World of Fine Wine UK 2015,
• Best Wine List (Australasia), World of Fine Wine UK 2014, 2015, and
• Grand Award, Wine Spectator USA 2014 and 2015.
