QHotels’ Ian Goulding named Financial Director of the Year at national awards

Ian Goulding FD of the Year.
Ian Goulding, Financial Director of leading hotel group, QHotels, has been named as the UK Financial Director of the Year (Business), at the national Business Finance Awards 2016.
The prestigious awards, which celebrate the achievements of the UK's top finance professionals, teams and service providers, were voted for by a panel of industry experts and were presented at the Royal Garden Hotel, London, on 9th March 2016.

Ian was recognised for leading the financial restructuring of QHotels, alongside Managing Director, Michael Purtill, as well as the acquisition and integration of six De Vere resorts into the group, to create a £200 million turnover business without allowing costs to spiral or service to drop. In presenting the award, judges commented: “Ian’s leadership shines through. He shows strong entrepreneurial flair, and is creating real value for QHotels.”

In a business that employs 5,000 people Ian is not only FD but also heads up IT, procurement, central reservations and revenue management, along with being the lead on all legal matters.

In addition to the acquisition of the six former De Vere hotels, key milestones achieved during the judging period included seeing 2014’s turnover grow by 7.3% (1.6 pts ahead of the market) and EBITDA grow by 11.6%.

Underpinning it all was the refinancing and restructuring of the company balance sheet, which meant that group net liabilities of £108 million turned into net assets of £1.2 million.

Michael Purtill, Managing Director of QHotels, said: “From myself and the whole QHotels family, we wish to congratulate Ian on his fantastic achievement. He has been an integral part of the success of the group over the last 12 years and this award entry recognises the significant contribution he has made to the business, in what has been a record-breaking year.

“Ian has an ability to be able to work on a variety of projects at the same time and still give the same focus and attention to detail to each of them, no matter how big or small and remains approachable and accessible to all the people who report into him. This allows him to positively influence all levels of the business.”

Kevin Reed, head of editorial for Financial Director magazine, added: “I’m delighted for Ian. We undertake a robust judging process with some of the UK’s most senior professionals, including other finance directors, lawyers, academics and executive recruiters.”

QHotels has grown from just two hotels in 2003 into one of the leading brands in the UK hotel conference market with 26 hotels across the UK and a turnover of £200 million. The group has won numerous awards, including AA Hotel Group of the Year 2014-2015 and, this week, Crewe Hall in Cheshire, was recognised as the best venue in the country for business tourism at the 2016 Visit England Awards for Excellence.
