ExCeL’s Kevin Murphy receives OBE in New Year Honours List

Kevin Murphy, Chairman of ExCeL London
Kevin Murphy, Chairman of ExCeL London and former CEO, has received an OBE in the New Year Honours list in recognition of his services to the business tourism industry.
In previous roles, including his position as ExCeL CEO, Kevin has been fundamental in shaping the British events industry and continues to ensure its dominance as an international powerhouse.

Murphy oversaw the investment of £165m by ADNEC, which created a further 40,000 m2 of exhibition space and London’s International Convention Centre at ExCeL. Murphy also secured a further £55m investment in opening the UK's first Aloft hotel. In 2015, ExCeL welcomed over 3 million visitors, delivered 25% of London’s inbound business tourism and contributed £2.9billion in economic impact.

Now a board member of London and Partners, the official promotion organisation for London, Murphy works to attract international businesses to meet and exhibit in the UK capital city and to promote London internationally as a global city. In 2015, he also joined the Board of Visit Britain, the strategic body for inbound tourism and the National Tourism Agency, a public body funded by DCMS (Department for Media, Culture and Sport).

Kevin’s media career spans three decades and has involved private publishing, exhibition businesses and senior corporate positions with large media owners, including AGB, Maxwell Business Communications and Emap plc.

Kevin has served twice as chairman of the AEO and it was his first tenure that saw the exhibition industry adopt ABC auditing as the industry standard. He has also served as a board member of ABC and chairman of the AEV.

“It’s a huge honour to be awarded an OBE for services to business tourism,” says Murphy. “This industry is very dear to me and I’m delighted to have played my part in cementing London’s reputation as the home of world leading events. Personal highlights have included supporting London’s bid to host the most successful Olympics in history, opening the capital’s International Convention Centre and Phase 2 development at ExCeL and delivering on our ambition to place London in the top 10 of the ICCA rankings and ExCeL London as a truly global venue. I’d like to personally thank everyone who has made this accolade possible, particularly the fantastic teams at ExCeL and London and Partners.”
