Leeds Hotels & Venues Association Annual Awards winners
A glass was raised to the best of the Leeds’ Hospitality sector last week (Thursday 11 June 2015) at the Leeds Hotels & Venues Association (LHVA) Annual Awards Dinner. The ceremony was held at the Queens Hotel, with Harry Gration (MBE) hosting, and was attended by 240 staff from across the industry.
During the evening a prize raffle was drawn, raising £745.65 for SACAR, a specialist charity supporting adults with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, which is this year’s Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal.

Cosmopolitan Hotel was the biggest winner this year, taking home two accolades; Ian Richards was crowned Unsung Hero and his colleague John Rogers won the Exceptional Customer Service Back of House Award.

Highlights included a new category, the People’s Choice Award, which was sponsored by the Yorkshire Evening Post.  This category was closely contested, with the winner, Janet McAteer from Hilton Leeds City separated by just 11 votes from her closest contender, Bewleys Hotel commis chef, John Shields.

Gordon Jackson, Chair of Leeds Hotels and Venues Association and General Manager of Thorpe Park Hotel & Spa said: “For the hotels and venues of the city, this is one of the most important dates in the year- the chance for staff to gain recognition for all of their sterling work, which often goes on behind the scenes. The quality of this year’s candidates is reflective of the city’s growing reputation within the industry. Well done everyone who was nominated and congratulations to all of the winners."

Other winners included Leo Higney from Malmaison who was commended for his Exceptional Customer Service Front of House. The Top Team Award went to the famous Concierge Team at The Queens Hotel and the Mentor of the Year Award was given to Clare Marsden from Leeds United Football Club. The final award went to Shaun Levitt from Thorpe Park Hotel & Spa, this year’s Rising Star.

The judging panel was made up of a selection of Leeds hospitality royalty, including representatives from Leeds Beckett University, Leeds Bradford Airport and the Institute of Hospitality.

Mike Crowther, Chair of the Judging Panel and Director of Service Impressions Ltd, who said: “The standard of candidates was so high, and I feel very privileged to be part of the panel recognising all of their hard work. There were some truly tough decisions to be made, and I would like to congratulate everyone who took part.”

A special award also went to Peter Chubb formerly of Weetwood Hall for his services to hospitality over the years. Peter retired from Weetwood Hall in April, having worked there for 11 years and has committed many years as an Executive for the Leeds Hotels & Venues Association.
