The popular 36-hole venue, which is set just 20 minutes south of Lisbon and is part of the innovative ORIZONTE – Lisbon Golf group – was awarded a ‘Recommended Certificate’ for 2015 by top Dutch website Leadingcourses.com.
Tagged as ‘by golfers for golfers’, the Netherlands-based site produces its rankings based on the opinions of golfers – with more than 200,000 reviews of golf courses, in six languages, available on the website, and rankings are published only if sufficient reviews have been posted for the given course. And a ‘Recommended’ certificate is only awarded to a golf club if it has received a rating of at least 7.5 (out of 10) on at least 10 reviews.
José Maria Cazal Ribeiro, from ORIZONTE – Lisbon Golf, said: “It’s always a great privilege to receive an award and it’s even better when the accolade comes from visiting golfers as it is a direct endorsement of the work that we’re doing to offer the best golf experience possible.
“Aroeira has a rich golfing heritage with two fantastic golf courses and its very encouraging to see the recent investment programme that has been undertaken there pay immediate dividends.”
“It has hosted many prestigious tournaments in the past and, with the maintenance programme that we’ve introduced, we are confident that it will be a favourite destination for both locals and visiting golfers in the months and years to come.”
Jeroen Korving, managing director of Leadingcourses.com, said: “We would like to congratulate the staff of Aroeira on this significant achievement. By winning this award, Aroeira belongs to the best golf clubs of Portugal.”
Situated just a short drive from the Portuguese capital, the reputed Aroeira estate is a favoured base of Lisbon’s glitterati and features two outstanding golf courses – Aroeira I and II, with the former a venue for the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997.
In addition, the venue features an array of shops, restaurants, a huge outdoor pool and a tranquil atmosphere, while the golden sandy beaches of Caparica are only a short drive away.
Aroeira is part of ORIZONTE – Lisbon Golf which brings together six well-established but unsung layouts to the south of Lisbon in the natural beauty of the Costa Azul region, and one further 9-hole course in Oeiras, just 15 minutes from the city centre.
As well as the two 18-hole championship courses at Aroeira, the innovative group features Quinta do Peru, a venue for several European Challenge Tour events, and Ribagolfe, which has hosted the European Tour Qualifying School since 2009 and provides two more challenging courses, both set within ancient cork oak forest.
Golfers can also enjoy the 7,000-plus yards challenge at Santo Estevão, while the extensive practice facilities available across the venues help make ORIZONTE the ideal option for individuals and groups looking to book a stay, play and learn package.
